Hopefully they'll be opening next year. I had a tour around them earlier this month and I think it's gong to be special when it opens.

Yea thats a very good site for photo tours of different courses. The lads on there certainly know their golf architecture.

Cheers for the link, the pics of the new 9 look fantastic. Carne is one of my favourite links courses. I remember the first time I played it back in 07 being told by a member about the proposed new 9 and seeing the extra land of left of 18. The member also said between one thing and another he didnt think it would ever happen, glad to see it come to fruition.

The new 9 is supposed to be better than what there is so i cannot wait, the most under rated course in the country IMO. If this course was on the east coast they would be charging 100 quid to play it.

I was on that tour of the new nine that's on GCA.

The GCA people know a huge amount about architecture, but they can be very sniffy about courses.

Building holes out there takes a long time as there isn't much money to play with.

We also visited Strandhill on the way back. A great fun course. They also own the dunes behind their fourth hole and maybe one day could develop that, if they're allowed.

When we were down therei got the impression that most of the work was been done by the current green keeping staff so i'd say it will be finished when its finished.

Just a few weeks ago. The greens are all sodded and the fariways will be widened a bit - just mowing up the side of a few dunes...

I was asking Strandhill about that a while back - there are too many environmental issues with the dunes behind the 5th tee apparently, so they won't be allowed to do anything back there... well, unless they recruit Donald Trump.

What I could see of the new 9, during the Atlantic Coast Challenge, looked amazing. If they really are that good, there should be a nice bit of hype around the course in the coming months.

I don't think they have given up on it yet. It's a European environmental thing, but they've gotten around it in places like Machrihanish in Scotland... so maybe all is not lost yet.

One of the best courses in Ireland by far. As said already if it was located in a more assessable area it would be one of the top 5 courses easily.
Will definitely try go back up there when the new nine is finished to give it a go.

And they couldn't be nicer there. They top up your coffee like all places should. Very friendly relaxed atmosphere.

Played Carne last year, it's a cracking golf course as it is, so another nine would make it even more interesting.

    Well worth a visit.

Looks like its opening up during the Summer.

"Carne Golf Links is about to take its links to a new level, when it opens it's new additional nine holes on August 1 this year.

The new nine are built on the most spectacular part of the property. Golfers who have been fortunate to have played Carne will understand when we say that the new nine is even more special than the Hackett back nine.

The Carne 27 holes will consist of three loops of nine, starting and finishing at the clubhouse.

The new nine will be available to visiting golfers on a limited basis during Aug, Sept. & Oct. this year, as part of a 27-hole package only"

So it looks like €65 for 27 holes in August. Must have GUI/ILGU car to play the new nine....

Looking forward to the 1st of July for the Atlantic coast, can you see many of the holes from the old back 9.
Played Strandhill at the weekend another cracking course on the west coast.
Think i have played all the Links courses on the west coast from Carne up to Rosapenna the south west will have a lot to live up to, to match the quality of the north west along with the value.

    Hi Mike,

You can get glimpses of the new nine from the 16th and the 18th fairways, among other places. The best location may be from the elevated 11th or 18th tees though.

    Hello all,

Having been involved with the creation of the new nine holes, I'm very excited about them finally opening this year. It really is some spectacular land out there in Carne.

Thanks for the positive write-up on your blog, GolfPredictor. Shame you didn't get the weather to capture the glory of the place with your photos.

If anyone has any questions, I'd be delighted to try and help.

    Best Regards,
    Ally

    Hi Ally,

No worries - great job on the new holes! Being a native of the area, I'll have plenty of chances to capture them in their full majesty in the coming months!

I'm always stumped by the golfers who say the front nine is not interesting. I would call the par five 4th a bland hole and the 1st hole quirky, but the other seven are dynamic little beasts. I reckon the problem is that the back nine is so big and impressive that the front nine struggle by comparison.

I was sent some of Larry's photos as well, and I was there twice in the first week of July. The place is looking great. Can't wait to play it on the 23rd.

I love the front 9 there as well, the bits of the new 9 that we could see looked good. Pic of the first looks great.

Love carne, can only imagine the 9 extra holes are great. Too pricey for my liking tho.

Wow, on a gusty day that approach will be some fun.

I was up there last week, playing the new nine (Kilmore) holes as part of a composite 18. This combines the 'old' back nine with the new nine so you play through the biggest dunes. Holes 1-7 and 17-18 are existing holes, with the new nine made up of holes 8-16.

Hard to believe that they found bigger dunes - but they did. If I was to make an even remotely negative comment about the holes it's that a couple of the climbs knock the bejaysus out of you. Then again, when you get to the top it's all worth it.

Photographs of the composite 18 here (new holes are 8-16)

Great to finally meet you last week Kevin and wonderful to get such a positive feedback, especially from the members.

    All the best,

Just managed a quick look at some of the completed holes yesterday (in slightly better weather!). The layout is spectacular of course, but it's a bit rough and ready yet. When it matures in a year or two (as they say), it should be fantastic. Best bring your crampons and oxygen tanks for some of those steep climbs though! The views from those tees are pretty good, if you do manage to summit those massive dunes.
