Point and drive navigation app?

    Hi,

I've been spending far too long looking for an app that will let me pick a destination from the map and then give navigation to it.

Most of the navigation apps I've tried have many landmarks and gas stations/bars/restaurants etc but none I can find will let me pick my destination manually, which I find very frustrating.

My problem is, I'm in a Working Dog walking club, and every weekend we pick a random hill to climb, and most of them are off the beaten path, which makes navigation a real handful. Since I upgraded to the S3 getting around the country has been a serious task. So I was hoping that someone here could tell me the name of an app that will let me choose my destination from the screen map and then show me the quickest route to it.

I know it sounds this should be easy to find, but in the last few weeks I've tried at least 4 GPS apps and haven't found what I'm looking for yet, so any help on this would be a great service to me.

    Thanks

    Vince

    Google Maps
Long press on where you want to go > Get Directions > Navigation

    What's wrong with Google maps?
    http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/
If you want to navigate to a point on a map just long tap a location and select the box which pops up and pick directions. You then have a choice of Car/Public Transport/Cycling/Walking.

I'm lmao here because the google navigation app doesn't have this function, but the maps app does.. and it even switches to navigation app when it's asked for...

I spent a month wrecking my head trying to figure out why it wouldn't work, I don't know why I need two apps for one task, stupid android..

    Problem solved though,

    Thanks :)

Also, don't forget you can save the maps for off line use since the latest update.

The Navigation isnt an app in itself. Just a shortcut to the navigation section of maps. It can be a messy problem though in allowing single apps create multiple icons (facebook did the same creating shortcuts to the messenger & camera sections of their app)

yeah I agree, they should limit the amount of shortcuts to 1 and leave it at that, so noobs like me can actually make something work.. :) and offline usage too, makes it a great app all round.

    Thanks again for the tips,

    Vince

App called Navigator uses Open Street maps. If you install it and use the instructions above, you should get option to use it.

Since it downloads all open street map data for Ireland, you won't get any data charges.

I find Google maps caching a bit limited since it only works to certain radius and you have to remember to do it.

Maybe it works better now but it used to be like that

I've only tried it in California (on my crappy Froyo Wildfire), as I'm over here for a few weeks with work. I presumed that it wasn't region restricted.

It behaves really weird. Zoom out a bit then move it around and you should be able

Without wanting to start one of those 'mine is better than yours' wars, Nokia maps with its 100% offline capability, is miles ahead in this regard. All the maps, worldwide, 100% offline (no area's, no limits) with voice navigation.
True, they're not exactly the same as Google maps (Nokia is vector based), but if I need to go from point A to point B, I really couldn't care less about the pretty pictures of the houses etc. I wish they'd port it to Android via an app and not just HTML5 (as it currently is).
    Just my 2c..

    Vince,
Have a look at 'My Tracks' on the Play Store. Its a free app by Google which has been recently updated. Sounds like it may be right up your street (sorry ...!).

Yeah just figured that out, tried the whole of dublin, and it wouldnt work, zoomed out to view a bit of meath too and Bam! it worked, strange indeed, pity i was on my way to meteor to bring my phone back :( playing with jellybean is going to have to wait a week or two till i get my phone back

yeah my last phone was a nokia and the maps on that was superb, simple, effective and didn't cost a shiny button to install, ovi store was / is very limited, but they do what they say they do, unlike alot of android apps i've been disappointed with.

I'll have a look at my tracks in a mo, but now someone has given me the user manual for Gmaps it's all I really need, doing the job perfectly. For offline usage with google maps is kinda stupid too, I mean I've got a 16GB memory card, but I can't save more than one county at a time.

But se la via at least I'm not getting lost down country lanes any more ;)

    Vince

@ Zilog, my tracks is a tidy little app ain't it ! thanks a lot for that one, guess the play store is easy when you know what to search for :P

    Hi all,

Can anyone shed some light on where the Navigation button option in Google Maps Lab's has disappeared to? I found it to be a great option in the past but it's simply not even an option in my current version of Google Maps which is 6.9.0 (#6090014) gmm-android-google.

    Ben

G Maps can be used in following way
On pc, find the area u want to navigate to, very handy for remote places that dont have a address
Add to your starred places (favourites)

From your phone, you will see a list of starred places, pick the starred place, then navigate

I have tried that and thought I was onto a winner until I put in 3 unnamed roads

Telling the difference between was getting tougher and I'm the kind of guy who likes things easy. The long press with the map open works just fine.

    Thanks

Go to: Google Bookmarks and you can rename your starred places.
