Car keys stolen from house but car not stolen as i gave chase. Armed robbery and Guards where obviously well involved. Car needs to be rekeyed @ 800 euro

I am fully comp with RSA but car is registered in Girlfriends name.

Swapped to her name a while back as we broke up for a very short period and i just never notified insurance when we got back together or broke up. Car was registered in my name before for 3 years. Hers for maybe 1.

Awaiting decision but if they cover it i obviously want a full job done. If i have to pay for it im just gonna got a key cut and sell the car up the other end of the country as my parents are from there. Car is worth about 2k if even.

If they didn't get a chance to clone the keys is there any point in getting new ones, Seems like a waste of time and as far as i'm aware you can't insure something that is not legally yours. I wouldn't panic seems like everything turned out ok.

You don't have to be the registered owner of a vehicle in order to insure it. You should confirm with your insurance company that you are covered though. If they weren't aware of the ownership change, they might have a problem with it.

Two things to remember here: if the original keys had a remote, you'll need a new remote too or the thieves can still unlock your car with the original one; make sure to get the immobiliser system reset so only the new keys can be used, otherwise they can use the RFID pill from the old key to unlock the immobiliser and hotwire the car the old fashioned way.

Car could be used in a sting operation plant cameras and fuel cut off catch them that took the keys.
They probably threw keys away as when they hit a house they are using most of the time public transport and if there happens to be a car they use it to transport all your goods away if not they usually go for small items and head off onto another job.
Be careful these days because they are not even watching the houses they go up to the front door knock and ring and knock on the windows and if no answer that has is free game in and out in a couple of mins nobody sees anything.
Sell the car elsewhere different area and all be fine

I think that it could lead to a write off claiming E800 on a less than E2k car.

The only ones who can answer this question is your insurance company. Anything here is just pure speculation.

Waiting on an answer. Theyre too good to work weekends them insurance people :D Robberies dont happen at the weekend sure.

I just taught someone might have experienced something like it. Surely to god im not the first person that uses the "family" car thats registered in the partners name.

If i have to pay i have a good plan for a sting operation. Ive a gps tracker on route to me now. It can disable fuel pump remotely also. Ill let them drive off but will get an sms to let me know its on the move and live location feed on Google maps. As soon as the guards are beside them ill disable fuel pump and kill the car.

8 years in prison the Guard reckons cause they brought a weapon and dropped it at the scene. :pac:

edit - also no remote on key. Youll need to actually put key in lock.

    What weapon? Guns? Knifes?
C'mon, we want gory details of your heroic escapades!

GSM blockers are cheap and easily available, better to not let them get the car. I can't really see the Gardaí rushing out to hunt down a stolen car when they take ages to respond to most robberies.

Your house insurance should cover it. Same thing happened to me in November; house broken into, car keys taken but not the car as we disturbed the burglar. Same as you, had to get the ignition recoded and the keys replaced. House insurance covered the lot.

Yes,you do,its the basic premise of insurance ie you have to have an insurable interest or in laymans terms,in the event of a loss you will be out of pocket.

OP,your insurer will likely cover the stolen keys, the over whelming majority of insurers cover this as standard on a comp policy usually up to about €650,when the keys are stolen from your main residence.

You may run into an issue though as you arent the registered owner, its grand in a spousal situation but Im not so sure how it would work in a common law spouse/partner situation.
