built my computer 2 months ago with the intention of upgrading around now:

    specs atm
    8 gigs of ram
    as rock z68 pro3 gen3
    xfx pro 650w
Intel Celeron G530 (got this just until i upgraded)
    R3 case/1gb HD etc

now i want to upgrade CPU and get a GPU. i'm not too into FPS games but i play some sometimes so when i do i'd like decent FPS on my samsung 24" sncmaster

i have 400~500 to spend on both cpu and gpu. was thinkin 2500k and maybe 7850? what gpu is best bang for the buck atm?

    cheers

Well, you've got a z68 board so a 2500k sounds in order and 7850 is decent midrange card with decent overclocking abilities afaik, so that seems about the right choice.

If your budget is stretching nearer the 500 than 400, perhaps consider getting a SSD on top of that ??

Edit : Crappy typos, guess it's late :D

Are you planning on over clocking? 7850 will run any modern game you throw at it pretty nicely.

yeah i will overclock. have a skythe mugen B heat sink there that i'll stick in once i get the cpu. i'll also try OC the gpu, should i stretch my budget to try fit in a 7870 or is it not worth the money? i'll get an ssa in a few weeks

My personal view on it is to by the XX50 cards (either 7850 or 7950) and then over clock. I'd hold off a couple of weeks though there are price drops afoot!

Yup, hold on a wee bit as ati having a price cut.

    2500k
    7850
    120gb ssd ( Samsung or m4 )

I don't think the 7850 is affected by the cuts, at least it wasn't mentioned here. I'd still wait and see though.

looks like the price gap between the 7850 and the 7870 will go down. does this make the 7870 much better value than before? cheers lads

bump. didn't go ahead with it then but am about to pull the trigger now unless i should change something because of price/hardware changes over the last 2 months?

or for an extra 25 quid should i get a 7870 instead of 7850? (will be powering a catleap monitor btw..)

What has changed is the monitor from a Samsung 24" to a catleap :p.

You'd really want to be considering at least a HD7950 in that case, unfortunately the price difference is almost exactly the same as the cost of the 128Gb crucial SSD :o.

You could always bump up to an i5-3570k, that motherboard allows Ivy Bridge processors with a BIOS update. Also if you have the small bit of extra cash bump up that 7850 to this 7870. For the small bit extra it's worth it and I think there was some problem with some Sapphire AMD cards awhile ago, I can't remember which specific cards had problems tho.
