Back-up Software Solutions for external hard Drives

    Hi there-

I'm a research student looking to finally sort out a satisfactory back-up system for my windows laptop.

I work with alot of data and while the total size of my work storage requirements is less than 250GB i have a huge number of files.

What I need is a solution which automatically(or at max upon a click or two) back-ups my hard disk upon connection by ONLY updating files which have changed or new files. (My previous caveman back-up technique involved drag and drop re-writing which takes ages)

My dream solution is the following.
A 2.0 USB portable 1TB (portable) hard drive disk which I can partition into 750GB and 250GB.

I'll use the large partition to store all my media data etc. But I need a back-up software tool that will use the 250GB to completely back up my C:/ Drive automatically without a painfully slow re-write process.

    So my three questions are
    A. Can this be done

    B. Can any regular NFTS based PC back-up software tool be installed on any NFTS hardrive?

    C. Can you suggest 1TB drive and/or a back-up back-up software tool

Would really appreciate anyfeedback at all on this.

    Oldbie

    Karens Replicator
Synch Toy. (this leaves index files after itself which I don't like)

Cheers BostonB. When you're partitioning the drive does it matter which one you selected as the primary? i.e. Should I use Karens Replicator to back up my C:/ drive to my primary partitioned F:/ drive?

Personally I wouldn't bother with the partitions. Why do you want partitions?

Because I'm only a jack of all trades and a master of none. i.e I'm bottom of the class in the I.T school but I still got in the door.

These auto install software yokes of WD, seagate and the like had me totally confused about how such back up systems can work.

Already using Karyens Replicator. It works an absolute DREAM!!!!

Go raibh míle míle maith agat.

Best to test it for while with test data in case it does something unexpected. Note that a synch isn't a backup. A backup keeps old versions not just the latest version of the data.

I love syncback. It does exactly what you want and is very easy to set up. There's a free version:
