    Hi lads,

    I'm looking at a nice 2007 Limited Edition Audi A4 2.0 tdi for €12k.

Currently driving a 2003 Passat 1.9tdi with 99,000 miles and looking to trade it in with them.

Any rough ideas on what kind of deal I should be looking to cut?

Trading in your Passat the garage will give you next to nothing for it, If you could afford to buy the Audi straight and sell your passat privately would be the best and cheapest.

Failing that I'd say be prepared to pay at least/roughly 10 grand for the Audi with you car.

Cars like yours are asking in and around 4k.

Dealer will probably look to do around 8,750k cost of change, flogging your car for 3.25k to trade. I'd be starting with 8k cost of change. The dealer selling for 12k probably has a nice bit of fat, it sounds pricey for a 5 year old A4. You'll probably do well to get in at 8,400 or so.

I'm inclined to think you'd have no problem selling that passat privately for 3,500 - 3,750 though. Nice low mileage diesel saloon. You'd be in a much better position then to bang 11k on the counter and say take it or leave it. Even at 11,500 that'd be 7,750 - 8,000 cost of change.

That said, I don't like the idea of selling cars privately so I never do it. I probably leave 500 euro behind on any change but I just get on with it. I'm never gonna be a skilled negotiator, and I've usually narrowed it down to one or two cars so I just end up buying it (once it checks out) because I'm so weary from the whole process, staring at carzone until 1am etc.

It would appear from the replies that got in before mine that I'm being wildly over-optimistic for you!

No, I'd agree with that assessment, the trade-in car is desirable in the market, quality diesel saloon with below average mileage, will do another 150,000 as a taxi if nothing else. Also the Audi is before the CO2 tax regime and the dealer will know the higher tax is an issue for buyers

Likewise I can't be arsed with private sales, you'll be looking at the old car for months, at least if it goes through a dealer you're done with it all at once. I'd open with 8,000 grand cost to change and end up in the 8,500-8,750 like Mr Derp said. both you and the dealer will be happy enough

Not a hope, If you think the garage is going to give you 4000 for a 9 year old passat,

The garage is out to 'screw' you he's gives you nothing for your car and has a 'fat' asking price, that's how they stay in business.

I agree with the first two posters

    9000 to 10,000 to change

Ugh ... Yeh ... generally businesses have to make money to stay in business.

Sell the Passat privately, diesel Passats have a following here so it will be easy to sell and someone will probably pay over the odds for it.

Also imo €12k for a 07 old shape A4 is a bit rich in my books and don't be too distracted by the "limited edition" model, all it did was add alloy wheels and leather steering wheel to the pretty basic standard model.

I seen a 01 passat with 140k miles no service history and not in ''mint condition lad'' sell for 3000 last week..

As the guys said sell the passat private and then do your bargining with no trade in!

I wouldnt pay 12 for and 07 audi. Its the old tax regime which makes it next to useless on resale.
Id look for one from the North thats a UK fleet auction import. Try Adavanced Auto sales in Dunmurray they should be able to get you what you want.
You can drive on yellow plates for a month legally, and in the mean ime flg passat privately and use funds to cover vrt.
