Ive been playin bf3 recently on a full hd t with hdmi cable and I think the graphics are unprecedentedly good. What type of graphics card is the Xbox 360 equivalent( like in the g force range).

The 360 is powered by an ATI Xenos, closely related to the X1800 series of Radeon cards and the GTX 7800/7900

Extraordinary given it's age that if you ran some current games like bf3 as the op mentioned on a 7 year old pc that pc would likely roll over and die and that a quality card for a pc these days would cost nearly as much if not more than an xbox :D

the xenos has some features that weren't in the chip it was based on, as well as being structured a bit differently in general, so between that and the whole optimized for a uniform platform aspect of consoles, in reality its far more powerful than a regular X1800 or 7800gtx class card...I would not like to see BF3 on either!

you also have to remember that the console is rendering these games at much lower resolutions and with reduced detail too which is another way it gets around its limitations.

Console developers optimise the **** out of their code, as they need to squeeze as much performance out of limited consoles. Often games released years after the console launched will have far superior graphics to games out on release.

plus they have access to the card directly - there is no having to translate via directx to get it to work ,

mad the difference being ableto actually access the card directly seems to bring.

^that said, have a look at some youtube comparos between PC/360/PS3 and you'll see straight away that optimising code for stagnant hardware has fairly strict limits lol

Actually, this isn't true. You still have to go through DirectX on the 360. The PS3 GPU features though can be accessed directly.

You could theoretically write 360 code that accesses the GPU directly, but the problem is that Microsoft would refuse to certify it as their guidelines state that all calls must go through DirectX.

Yes, that's very true. It still plays a large factor in how the games look as the developers learn the tweaks and tricks that allow them to produce better looking games on the same hardware.

Edit: also, consoles have next to no overhead, compared to a PC.

Well that's fairly obvious, don't think anyone in this thread needed to be told that.

But the point remains that an Xbox is far more powerful than the hardware is it actually based on eg. BF3 wouldn't run anywhere near what it does on the 360 running on PC with an X1800...it'd probably run at lowest settings at about 20fps. So that's why it's not as easy as directly stating that it's 'equal' to an X1800 or 7800GTX class card.

Yes, Microsoft created a console that does not use their own API in the slightest.
It is totally true that developers must access the card directly.
The 360 does not use Direct3D at all.

    True story.
