Brought my nearly 4 year old MacBook to a repair shop in Dublin a couple of months back. The only issue I had was the screen kept going off (either a bulb or an inverter issue).

Was told by said place that my MacBook was a write off, and was slowly dying....motherboard, etc. They also said it would sometimes not turn on. That was a surprise to me, as I never had that issue before I dropped it in, which I told them. Their response was ....well when you open these things up, etc...

But they were ever so kind as to offer me the service of throwing all my hard drive info onto an external drive for a scandalous sum of money. Fu*k that.

Anyway, brought Mac home....and it was dead! The battery would charge, but Mac wouldn't turn on.

Brought the Mac to another place.....only to be told it was indeed a bulb issue. Also discovered that the wire connection that connects the keyboard to the computer itself was damaged, hence the reason why the computer wouldn't turn on. No coincidence I'm sure that this issue arises after the mac's visit to the first repair shop.

And the original computer repair place would have a supposedly good reputation. How could they have been so wrong?? From a written off Mac and shelling out a grand for another.... to handing over a few quid and a Mac that's now working a treat. Unreal.

Are you allowed to name the place that sorted you out? And the other place too while you're at it.

But yes, it does indeed pay to shop around.

If the first place was an Apple recommended place they would have did an Apple Service Diagnostic from a external and have no need to take it apart to know if the problem was with the logic board/motherboard.
They could at least have run the long apple hardware test and it would say if the logic board was the problem.

I think some places if not sure what is wrong they just say it's the motherboard.

Btw it a place told me my macbook had a motherboard I would run from them.:)

OP, provided you aren't defaming them, it's okay to name the companies in question. We'll assume that company A was incompetent rather than deliberately trying to screw you.

Dodd, FYI Apple Service Diagnostic shows very limited information. I'm not sure why you would Run? Original macbooks did suffer from a problem with the Logic board that turned off the backlight. In My opinion, a few things could be at fault here. Display, Inverter, LVDS Cable, Inverter cable, or logic board, it is a case of testing each of these individually, no diagnostic is going to tell you which part is at fault.
