The Dublin Docklands really could have been something special if this went ahead, reminds me somewhat of South street seaport in manhttan, the plans had so much life and character and would have really complimented the city, but now instead we have soulless, charactersless, row upon row of glass office boxes and apartments lying vacant

Another plan that sadly never went ahead in the dublin docklands..apparently some outdoor public baths on a bridge were going to be built..actually looks pretty cool.

Just goes to show what happens when a country run by bog mafia tries to be an international big dick.

To be honest those "artist's impression"s of developments always make them look much, much nicer. Compare any of them with the real-world counterparts and you'll see what I mean.

They're also always sunny and have loads of people in them as if the population would just instantly migrate there. Even if those buildings were built, which a lot of them were I think, it would probably still be soulless and abandoned.

    :pac:

The area in the first pic does be quite windy(like wind tunnel effect) most times of the year, no shelter from the elements if they had put seating in. Behind the camera towards the Fresh store, its gets quite nice to sit out in as its more sheltered. Just a thought :)

Yeah there's some nice stuff down there but it's like it's abandoned. Not sure what it needs to get people down.

Oh I know that! We could have done a lot worse, the works done on the docklands are far from bad. The convention centre, the grand canal theatre, SB bridge are all amazing! Its just too modern for me, I much prefer older looking more historic places and buildings, I just think the original plans would have fitted in much better with dublin , a historic city.

I think I agree with you actually. I used to love all that new modern architecture - I think I assumed new was better and the more glass the better. Now I think it's just ugly. I don't think it ages very well either. Those classic architectural style buildings get better with age and are timeless.

Although I think my gripe with a lot of modern architecture (which also applies to high-rise buildings) is that it's rarely built uniformly. Just one modern building jammed in the middle of all the other brick buildings - ends up looking out of place and an eyesore. They need to come in uniform collections to look good.

Canary Wharf for example looks very well and I think it's because the buildings are all of the same style and the high-rises compliment each other.

Yeah when a population demands we spend what we don't have on education and health and borrows what we don't have to buy houses we can't afford and vote out politicians who don't want to spend spend spend.
