1.4 of that engine can get 45mpg if that helps, getting past 42mpg takes concentration tho.

Most people make fun of the VAG 1.4/1.6 16v engines but in fairness they are great cruisers for the size of them

Tbh if you are set on a small petrol and are gonna be buying a 07/08 i would go with the Kia personally for the warrantee and it is a more focused car for your needs

I was out at a seat Dealer today and he told me that actually the 1.4 petrol was nearly heaver on juice that the 1.6:eek: Or maybe he was just trying to flog the 1.6

Edit:I thought you are looking for Pre-2006 models. I would go for 1.4 tsi 122 bhp in that shape.

My perception of this era(pre-2006) of vw petrol engines:

1.4's are not so reliable or powerful
1.6 8v 102 bhp is very old design, thirsty but reliable engine.
1.6 16v 105 bhp is not so reliable
    1.8 and 1.8t thirsty but fun :D

Unabused Leon/Toledo is a fine car if you are ok with design.

Sometimes the smaller engine needs to be pushed harder to make reasonable progress, so sometimes in real life and not manufactures figures, the smaller engine is less economical.

I agree, my 1.4 Octavia needs to be driven by the scruff of the neck at times to do the basic things :(

Every overtake on the Curragh line is an adventure

I like VAG group cars, but that engine is just not good

Get a nice Mk1 Focus 1.6 in Ghia trim with plenty of kit and enjoy the extra space
