    You'd be quicker cycling.

    Are you doing long distances?

Smaller engine doesn't necessarily mean cheaper cost. What are you currently driving?

    Opel Astra

    OK, a couple more questions.

What sort of MPG are you currently getting?
How many miles would you reckon you cover a year?
What's the biggest expense that is making it difficult to afford, I'm assuming fuel, but just want to check.

    Fuel and tax

I dont travel that much tbh

Might as well pick up a small 1.0L petrol then.

Whats your budget ? What year is the Astra ?

smaller engine wont mean you will get better mpg. In some cases you need to floor those small engine diesels even to have them moving, which will mean it will use more diesel then a bigger engine on same route.
Now if you want to make savings, then check how much money you will spend on change it self and will it be worth it in the end? No point spending few grand on new car, just to save few hundred.

*i never heard that 1.4 astra is high running costs car.

    My OH owns this

    Peugeot-107-4.jpg

    Insurance -225 Euros
    Tax - 175 Euros I think
Fuel consumption 60/65 MPG depending on city/motorway driving

Great fuel economy, very nippy off the line and generally very cheap runner.

I doubt anyone that can't afford to run a 1.4 astra can afford a smart or newish pug 107. Even a yaris might be a stretch if things are that tight. Maybe a Fiat siecento or Cinquecento, corsa B or early C, seat ibiza, arosa. None fantastically appealing, maybe keep the astra and cycle/walk more.
