Hi lads. This is going to be my first deer stalking season (roll on September!), so I thought I'll do a bit of homework on getting right ammo for the job. Have been useing Hornady 58gr V-Max on foxes. Great round. Thinking of getting Hornady 95gr SST or 100gr SP maybe. So just wondering what would you advise, what is your choice on ammo make and bullet type. Thanks

Lad I do all my deer stalking has been using 100gr federal with great results the past 4 years.
28-30 euro a box aint bad either.

Stay away from the 80gr federal though as they are designed for foxing and expand way too fast and lads had was to many runners with them.

the federal 85gr sierra game king federal are meant to be a great round too though.

Hornady VMAX 95 grains will do the job nicely in the 243.:)

yes will do the job once the bullet is put in the right place

if ya hit a red with any deer calibre in the wrong place and it will be running for a while

I use federal vshock 95 grain on deer and 55 grain on foxes. Found reds drop a lot easier than sika. Was always told the bigger the deer ie reds/fallow the easier to drop them.was never sure if it was old wives tales and as I have shot very few reds can't say 100%. Anyone else know if this is fact or fiction?

If its a Tikka you have zelzlius try a box of 100grain sp if you wish to sample them but they have dreadful poor accuracy at 200 yards. Worlds worst. 80 or 95grain superformance be a great round.

95g SST will do the job for you all day long. Just make sure you place the bullet in the right Place. The same as with any caliber.

Which of these rounds are good but do the minimum damage to the carcase ? I tried ballistic tips before and found they did too much damage.

the soft nose do less damage as they expand less
they are designed for thick skinned animals ie deer expand less penetrate further

sorry but have to disagree with ya on the 80grains,i use them all the time on fallow and red,you must not be hitting them square up if your getting alot of runners

It wasn't me using them and it was 3 lads who got them when 100gr were out of stock and didnt even use the box. Federal even says the round is designed for foxes on their website.

No, they don't. They have it marked down as their deer-sized game bracket.

Actually it's interesting, acording to Federal website 80gr gives more energy than 100gr??

    http://www.federalpremium.com/products/compare/rifle_compare.aspx

Wind drift is smaller on 80 gr as well and obviously drop.
