Reducing Speed Limit on a Lane

    Hi - not sure I'm in the right place here but was just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to who I would contact to request that a speed limit be reduced on a single track lane which has a speed limit sign of 80km/h?

    The lane is about 2 miles long with only a few passing areas on it and has a couple of sharp bends (2 blind) on it. It is used as a cut-through between 2 main roads by both locals and businesses, some of which travel at high speeds.

    Locals here (including myself) use the lane for walks and cycling some like me with the kids. I'm fearful (especially as there's kids around) that there's going to be a nasty accident one of the days.

    I know that changing the speed limit sign to maybe a 50km/h sign might not make much of a difference to "some" motorists but I was also thinking of the speed bump option.

    Just looking for ideas really.

    Local authorities set speed limits, contact your local elected representative.

    There's not much point in doing this. The width and alignment of the road are perfectly obvious and anyone who would ignore that will also ignore a speed limit.

    Yeah I know there's not much chance of drivers observing the speed limit signs - to me the speed bumps would be much more effective - but then that costs.

    There was a case of road rage there on the lane the other day when a driver was asked to slow down :mad:

    Just feel I have to try something..... :)

    Cyclist.ie (the National Cycling Lobby) are pushing for legislation such as that found in France and Germany that allows roads to be declared local access only. The idea is that for minor rural or urban residential roads motorised access to the road is restricted to residents, agricultural traffic or persons on genuine business.

    The roads remain open to cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians creating a system of back roads they can use away from high-speed traffic.

    In France they are designated by the Sauf Rivrains sign or in Germany the Anlieger Frei sign (or Landswirtschaft Verkher Frei - awful mouthful)

    Sounds like what you need?

    Perhaps be the kind of thing the IFA could be asked to support? (The DoTTS are agin it)

    That sounds like a great idea galwaycyclist - but I'm not wanting to stop people using the lane - just want them to slow down and have a wee bit of consideration.

    As suggested earlier, I sent an email to my local TD which if I'm honest I thought would have been a waste of time - but I actually got a reply and ended up chatting with his secretary about it. She took all the details and said she would have the local Co Councillor call me to assess the lane. I'm hoping this guy does contact me so we'll have to wait and see......:rolleyes:

    Sounds great in theory but we know Irish motorists, if no one is around to enforce it, the signs will just be ignored.

    This too shall pass.
