Is there such a thing? The ones made of neoprene are too heavy to take off and put in your pocket on a long spin and if they are left on they make you feet sweat. So I was wondering if anyone has found a good pair of lightweight ones that actually work and are small enough to put in you pocket?

I cycled the ROK with someone wearing these:

    Look Rain Overshoes

The fitting around the sole was excellent, much better than the various other lightweight overshoes I've owned.

On the negative side, the sealing strip down the front had partially peeled away, so I'm not sure about durability.

The problem with Goretex is it is actually waterproof and breathable, but not at the same time.

I find these pretty good. They are reasonably waterproof, light and warm.

Are the overshoes any better at doing both jobs at the same time?

Ive found goretex shoes to be perfect in *most* irish conditions.

    Which goretex shoes?

Not cycle specific shoes, more goretex trainers/walking type shoes im using for commuting. Are cycle specific goretex shoes not more suitable for purpose?

In warm wet weather I use sealskinz socks and wear oversocks - Rapha make excellent ones in that they take a long time for you to get wet.
    They fold up easily.

could be water building up on the outside stops the breathing. use http://www.ecco-shoes.co.uk/shop/accessories/wax-oil.php or similar but be sure the similar does not stop breathing some products do. see the goretex site

Is it really possible for an overshoe to be actually waterproof? Most cycling shoes have perforations for breathability, and the cleat bolts often provide another route into the shoe too, so I'd expect the best you could do is to slow down the ingress of water, not prevent it.

Winter shoes/boots might well be waterproof but keeping water from getting in via your socks/tights is an obvious challenge there. One thing I've seen mentioned about some Goretex shoes/boots is that while they might be effective at keeping water out for a while, if/once it gets in there it has no exit so you complete your ride with a puddle inside the boot.

I have a pair of Shimano Goretex MTB boots that I used for commuting in very wet weather. The sole is sealed, even where the SPD cleat attaches, but I have to wear rain overtrousers to keep water out from above. They are fine for commuting, they'd probably be fine for off-road, but for a lengthy on-road spin I'd go with my non-waterproof road shoes every time (too clunky, too warm at times, not very adjustable on the move, etc.). For me the aim is to keep my feet warm even if they get wet and I settle for cheaper alternatives to Goretex when pursuing that goal.

Sorry, bit of a tangent from the main thread topic there. Back to that topic, one option might be to wear toe covers with light overshoes on top. It won't be any more waterproof, but if you get warm enough to require removing the overshoes the toe covers will still help keep some of the cold off your (possibly wet) feet without causing them to overheat like an overshoe might. Gore themselves do some (non-Goretex) light but windproof toe covers, as do a number of other manufacturers.

I think someone above has posted a link for the Pro Tarmac H20 overshoes on Ribble. They're pretty much the best on the market imho but can be hard to get hold of.
