Suspending Club Championships during AI run

Last year the Dublin Football Championship was run off in a bit of a haste in end september/October because of the county progress in the All Irelands.

Today in the indo I saw that Brian Cody is fine with a round of the KK hurling championship being played. I know that round two of the Tipp Club Hurling Championship is coming up soon, and that Kerry are playing the Football Club Championship.

I was just wondering how many counties run their club championships during the summer and which ones do not, and why they arent? Is it because clubs who have a few lads on the county panel feel that they will be disadvantaged??

I was thinking of this in the context of why KK, Galway, Kerry, Cork, teams who have long gaps in their intercounty schedule this time of the year, always appear sharp. Is it the case that whilst the team is not playing, the players are?

Certainly in Waterford we are obsessed with calling off games, it's crazy and it ruins the club championships.

Galway have changed the (hurling) system this year to keep games going. There's a full round due this weekend.

Previously they'd have taken 3 months off starting around the June bank holiday.

The county championship started in kerry about 4 weeks ago, 2 rounds played, draws done for the next round but nothing more till Kerry are out |I presume, its the same every year and its a disaster. The local district championship final wasnt played here until xmas eve which is no good for anyone. The county players are wrapped in wool down here. Having a county player can be more of a hinderence at times and anyway, I know in our case he only gets to play 4 or 5 times max (depending on progression in our championship)

Dublin SFC kicked off back in May/June and about 2 rounds played thus far.SHC is well underway with the group stages complete. One would expect the SHC to be finished quite earlier than normal. :(

I think it is best for the clubs to get more games going earlier. There is no point cramming games in the space of a month. It hasn;t done the Dublin Club Champions much over the last couple of years.

I think the Dublin CB with their banning of players involved in County teams from playing for their clubs has made for a bad club championship's. Crokes in football and Boden in hurling lose a lot of players through this.

This is a topic that is relevant in Cavan at present. Not a ball has been kicked in any of our championships yet - senior, intermediate or junior. Indeed, I'm not sure about Divisions 2 or 3, but some teams in Division 1 of the league have only played 10 of 15 games. The championship is due to start in late July/early August and usually ends around the last week of September. It will be delayed though if Cavan are still in the championship (in other words, it won't be delayed).

League games are being called off at present due to Cavan's intercounty games. There are some ludicrous decisions made at times to be honest - for example, Castlerahan had two league games called off at the start of the year because Ronan Flanagan was on Ulster duty. They now have to try and fit those into a tight schedule, all because one player was missing. He didn't even kick a ball for Ulster.

Next year the championship is changing though and the Junior championship will run in June, the intermediate in July and the senior in August again AFAIK. I'm not all that familiar with the new system but the number of teams at senior level is being reduced and all three grades are running separately to allow some of the junior/intermediate teams to amalgamate and play in the senior championship.

The county board needs to do alot of work with fixture congestion. Some years the league final could be played as late as November.

Only the preliminary round in the Donegal SFC has been completed. Jim Mc Guinness has requested the the first round games did not go ahead after Donegal defeated Derry in June.
He had a similar request turned down last year. Glenswilly and N. Chonaill game ended in a mass brawl and a county panelist suffered a nasty facial injury.
So maybe they thought it was wise to grant him his wish this year. :D

In all honesty, its an awkward situation for players who are not involved with the county set up, and try to organise holidays and such things around games.

Its ridiculous, IMO there's nothing like games to keep lads on their toes anyway, they should be allowed play away apart from maybe the weekend before an intercounty game. If its good enough for Kilkenny it sure as hell should be good enough for the rest of us! They weren't expecting a quarter final fixture at all down there but their still playing away their club games as planned.

100% agreed. I think this is something that needs to be looked at maybe even from the top level. Like perhaps bring in a rule or directive from Croke Park that intercounty managers are not allowed to force the cancellation of club games, that would be a start.

There's no reason at all why lads couldn't play for the club this weekend and the county a week ot two later. Jesus you're not asking them to play on consecutive days or anything, and I've no doubt that the players themselves would probably prefer it that way. And if a guy gets injured playing for the club then so be it, he could as easily get injured in a training session or a challenge match with the county team.

Absoulte nonsense!!! Here in Roscommon our club player round 1 of intermediate championship on May 26th, and at present the 2nd round is fixed for the weekend of August 10. A player went to the USA on a 60 day sanction/transfer and will miss (i think) 2 league games. It's crazy having no games this time of year with long evenings and lots of lads around with college being off etc. Leagues and championships will now be finished in early winter with the evenings closing in, lads in college and travelling back for training etc. It's even got to where fringe players on the minor panel (not in matchday squad now) are 'discouraged' from playing with their clubs even at minir grade. Definitly a case of the tail wagging the dog if you ask me

Wexford have 3 rounds of senior hurling and football complete now. A couple of years back, we'd be lucky to have one round complete, and then a 2/3 month break. They have enforced it this year that games are to go ahead, despite county managers being upset over it. In the long run, it is far far better to do it this way. Biggest problem in Wexford though is that a lot of clubs are dual. About half of the 12 senior clubs are dual senior for hurling and football, and a lot of the rest would be intermediate. So its not a simple case of running off one of the hurling or football when the corresponding county team gets knocked out.
