Shotgun Licence question

Two friends are coming over from Europe for a driven pheasant shoot later in the year, in one of the larger estates. They are not bringing their own guns.

What are the legalities of letting them use one of my friend’s guns, who will also be on the shoot? As in, will the estate be checking licences? Is it okay to lend a shotgun to a person on the shoot, if the gun owner is there too with the correct licence?

No person can be in possession of a firearm unless they have a current/valid license for that firearm (unless on a range). If you were to lend them the gun they would be in trouble for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, and you for allowing them to have it.

The best thing to do would be to have them licensed on the gun for the duration of the stay/visit. There are visitor's permits, and non national licenses, which i just cannot put my hand on now, but a quick visit to the local station would clear this up. Alternatively have a search here for info. Use visitor's permit/license, guest, etc as key words.

Sparks mentioned something before about someone being able to carry a firearm for someone out hunting, the licence owner does not even need to be there. Prib explaining that wrong but im sure he will correct me soon

Deerspotter, why dont they just get a europass and bring their own guns?

Carriage, yes; use, no. Section 2(3)(f) of the Act. If you were caught with someone else's shotgun in one hand, a pheasant in the other, the shotgun's owner nowhere in sight and you tried using 2(3)(f), I think you'd find yourself in hot water...

According to the NARGC course I did under no circumstances are you allowed to use someone elses gun without a licence. Of course 5 min after we were told that we were brought clay pigeon shooting with the instructors guns :-P

Under instruction in a course or on an authorised range (also while under instruction) a person may use a firearm under 2(4)(d) & SI622/2011. (IIRC).

A driven shoot is where the birds are hunted towards a line of guns.
