A friend or ours has a '06 Astra, and has been having having issues with losing water, losing oil, and the service light coming on and off when accellerating hard, and when the heater fan was used, for quite some time now.
Various trips back to the Opel dealer, resulted in the car still showing the same symptoms after 'work' had been done on the car.

Today, the car took a turn for the worse just as she was passing said dealer, so she pulled in again.

This time she was told that the head gasket has gone, and was quoted (imo) mad money to repair the car.
Anyone here know approximately how much a head gasket job would be on an Astra?

Hi, my mum had the headgasket replaced on an '05 astra 8 weeks ago, it was done by an independet guy in naas( we live in wicklow but were in nass when the car died on the road) for 2.5k as the engine had to be reconditioned, opel wanted 4k, our usual garage said he would have done it for 2k, so yep its mad money altogther, seemingly when the headgasket goes in those particular astras, it nearly always damages the engine too

The average head gasket job on a normal car like the Astra should run to approx €700-€800.

Did you get a breakdown of the quote? i.e, what exactly they are charging 2k + for?

Unless they engine has been badly overheated then there is not real reason for there to be any further damage.

strange, that opel dealer didnt recognize leaking gasket stright away, as compression test would show this, also emmision test.... just wonder how long did you drive with blown gasket ?
loss of water and oil would be seen as heavy smoke through exhaust, which is first sign of blown headgasket.
what other work been done on car ?

price wise . up that number what Nissan Doctor said, id advice ask his help to do work on your car, as he done lots cars with headgasket issue.
