    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone out can explain the term "Empty Calories" for me?

I'm forever reading about cutting junk food out, as the are empty calories...

But even a can of coke has some nutrition, it may not be much but there is a lot of sugar which is a form of carbohydrates and gives energy?

Its just a term for unnecessary calories I think. Calories which basically do nothing for ya but act as calories.

Can of coke has no vitamins or minerals or whatever worth talking about. Its completely unnecessary for a human diet. Its just extra calories.

Yeah it has energy, but nothing else. Also, it no more satisfying than a low calories drink. So there are extra calories that people take with nothing to show for it.

It's a very vague terms, at the best of times

Not the most scientifically correct term. To me, it means food that has a lot of calories but aren't going to give you satiety. Coke, as you mentioned, and other highly processed foods would fit under that heading.
