    Hi all!

I need to get a laptop for Medicine, and was wondering what laptop would be most suitable for Medicine. Which laptop do most Medical students use?

    Many thanks:)

You don't need to get a laptop for medicine. There are loads of public access computer rooms around College, including a shiny new one with air-con in the basement of the new Biomedical Sciences Institute on Pearse Street. But by all means get one if you like, they are handy (as for any course).

How many times can you say medicine in 30 seconds? Any old computer will do.

Thank you! You have both been a fantastic help, giving me helpful details and advice. It's good to know there are people out there to help you in Trinity. Just as well I'm going to NUIG:)

Just wondering in terms of computers. I have a laptop, but its really heavy and not really suitable to bring in and out of town. Is it really necessary to have one in with you in lectures?

Not at all, it's just that some people prefer to take notes on their laptop. You'll easily get by with just a notebook and pen.

I could count on one hand the number of people who use a laptop to take notes in lectures (NUIG 3MB)

Most people have one though for using in the reading room/library

There really is very little else to say about the matter. Some science/engineering subjects require machines with a particular OS to run specific programs; this isn't the case for medicine. Get whatever laptop you like, if you want one.

As Lawliet said, it's not necessary. I just thought I'd add that if anything, trying to take your notes can be more difficult on a laptop. Between network connections going on/off, battery going down, having a distraction throughout you lectures, not having enough space to sit the laptop down properly, and having to worry if your typing is audible enough to annoy people, it's not worth the hassle. There's one poor lad in my course who's well known for annoying people throughout lectures with his laptop. It can be really distracting.

+1, especially the bit in bold. Hardly any of the classrooms I was in had chairs/desks which allowed you to use a laptop comfortably; even using pen and paper was difficult sometimes! Some lecture theatres were better, but overall they can be cumbersome to use in a lecture/seminar setting.

I'd also agree about the annoying audible typing, although nothing could compete with the strange lad in one of my seminar groups who used to look up rifle websites during the class...

Using a laptop is a pain to take notes, I always just free hand on the rare occasions I show myself in college.

I did the L.C. last year and I certainly didn't fail it:)

Sounds like someone has a chip on their shoulder when it comes to doctors-a nurse perhaps?:)

Don't be rude. You in fact appear to have a chip on your shoulder. What would being a nurse have to do with this?

In answer to your question, for medicine it doesn't matter. Only on certain courses do they have requirements for laptops in terms of specs and specialist software. My advice would be to get Microsoft Office for assignments and presentations etc...

You don't need a super-special laptop for medicine. And you don't accuse nurses of anything, especially when you've only just finished your LC.

You do realise you aren't a doctor right?

I do wonder why you posted this question in the TCD subforum, and not NUI Galway or Health Sciences Education.

I can't believe you have an attitude like that and you haven't even started the course yet. You'll definitely eat those words when you become more senior in medical school. An excellent example of how ignorance is bliss

    Username: DoctorMedicine
Status: Mentions the word medicine 3 times in opening post.

Sounds like you just have a superiority complex, and with an attitude like that towards nurses, you probably shouldn't be considering a field where you'll rely so heavily on them.
