    Hi,

I am just wondering has anyone out there gotten IT work through recruitement companies? I am currently looking for another job (I only graduated college last November) and I get contacted by recruiters around 2-3 times a week after they have seen my CV on Irish jobs and other sites. I have been told to apply directly to companies and avoid recruiters where possible but no one has ever really told me why! Could anyone share their experiences/opinion of them?

    Thanks

Of course you should apply to recruitment companies. I worked for one a few years ago. A lot of companies do all their recruitment exclusively through recruitment companies.

Recruiters can be very pushy I didn't want a particular job and they called me several times badgering me to go for the second interview.
I eventually told them I wouldn't move to Dublin and they stopped calling I'm working there now though got a job directly from a company a week later :D

Could you elaborate on the process of going through recruitment companies? I have heard they take a lump of your salary on an annual basis. How long does this last, etc?

    Thanks

    The process is simple enough.

Sep 1: When you send your cv to an agency, somebody will review your cv and decide what jobs they have available that would suit your skill set. Sometimes they will cold call companies if you are particularly good to try "make" a job for you. Depending on the agency, they may want to meet you in person before they send off your cv to any company. (The better agencies do this in my opinion).

Step 2: They send off your cv to the companies that have a suitable position for you. If the company is interested, they will arrange to interview you through the agancy.

    Step 3: You do interview

Step 4: You get offered job and then you can negotiate salary, benefits etc. All this is done through the agency.

Step 5: Show up for work!!

It is NOT true that the agency takes a portion of your pay or salary. I hear that nonsence all the time. They get paid commossion for finding you but it does NOT come out of your pay.

Exactly, the company who hire a person pay the agency either a flat fee, or a percentage of the total annual salary for a certain period of time depending on how long the candidate stays

If its IT jobs specifically you are looking for then it no harm getting in contact with a reputable IT recruiter. Though saying that choose wisely, as some recruitment agencies I'd avoid as they just want to you to go for jobs you have no interest in or not qualified/over qualified not skilled enough. Its all commission based though when it comes to recruiters, just getting a name on a database collect so many CV's and so on. I think either go with an IT recruiter that has a good rep and maybe go to a professional job coach or agency to help with CV and interviews as well as preparing for job applications and so on.

It is better to get in contact with the company/business directly when applying for jobs in particular ones IT based as each set of job requirements could vary. Though no major difference just what's expect on the job might vary and the interview questions might vary especially the technical ones will be determined by the type of IT job it is. You might have to do a written test or an aptitude test or a special test.

Can anyone recommend some good IT Recruiters? I'm plagued with emails every few days for one in particular that I sent my CV to years ago ...for jobs I'm not qualified for!
