Its on lshunter. I just missed who qualified into the next round of the men 1500m.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

Seán Tobin takes 6th in heat one of the 1500m with a time of 3.49.11.

Ruari Finnegan finished 10th in heat 3 with a time of 3.53.95.

Neither of them will progress to the final, but not a bad showing!

Finnegans heat very slow he ended up leading before the burnup in the last lap. Solid run. Missed Tobin's race (poor stream link) Siofra up in heat 5 next on Eurosports

Third for Buttner. Qualified for semi-final :)

Commentator obviously watching a different race, the slovenian girl clearly jumps left in front of Siofra causing her to jump right.

3rd finishing in around 2.05.87. Involved in a tangle with South African who fell around 450m. Likely to be an appeal but I doubt she will get DQ'ed over it

Six Europeans in the top 9 times! Wow! Great running by Siofra. Wouldn't it be marvellous if she made the final 8?

Despite the fact that her race was slower, I was very impressed with Ajee Wilson (USA) in heat 4. I'd expect her in the final and maybe even a medal contender. Jess Judd was very impressive but maybe ran quicker than was required?

+1 on this. I was very impressed with her run in the DL in New York. She dictated her heat and coming down the last 100 in her heat you could see that she was only doing enough to secure qualification. I reckon it will be between her and the Ukranian for the gold tbh

Collins with a great run. New PB of 9.26.26 for ninth Was in the hunt for the first two km and managed to keep relatively same pace in the last km but leaders dropped a 2.52 final km and burned here off.

Emelia Gorecka with a great run for 3rd. Definitely another one to keep an eye out for from the Mick Woods stables. Seems to be churning out female runners who seem to top the Euro XC scene and do well on global stage

What is this Chinese runner doing going off like that. Some of the races I've seen today have been a run rather naively.

You have got to go for it when you are taking on the Kenyans at the world championships.

Kate Veale was 17th, Emma Prendeville 31st. Very warm conditions by all accounts.

Joanna Mills 4th in 54.17 (SB). Top 3 qualify with 6 fastest losers. 3rd quickest after 4 of 6 heats.

Mills qualifies 3rd quickest of the fastest losers.

Also, Nigeria had 3 of the top 5 by rankings in the world in the w400m this year but the team haven't arrived.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

Kate Veale 18th in 48.50! Maybe seen as a disappointment? Although she has just completed her Leaving Certificate so maybe she wasn't able to dedicate herself fully to training for a few months.

Mills gets through as 3rd fastest loser. Good result in a new season's best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭the_real_lamp

Ben Kiely 4th in 400h. First 3 and 3 fastest losers. Time 52.39. Big PB!
Ben is the 2nd quickest loser with 2 heats left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,330 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

ben Kiely confirmed as through as a fastest loser. Great to see a PB in the big championships

Siofra Buttner 5th in her semi.

Siofra Buttner 5th in her semi.
Its a step up in class alright with all 3 semis done in 2.02

    Its gonna be some final.

Siofra still eligible in 2 years time though so experience will benefit her.
She needs that level of competition regularly though.

The final looks like it will be one of the best of the championships. Two Brits look classy, Ajee Wilson the favourite though?

The Ukranian looked strong in the first heat and sports a 2.00 PB, Ajee had to clock a PB to get through the heat so it could make for an interesting duel. Also depends on how much Judd has in the tank after 2 2.02 clockings on consectutive days

Siofra Cleirigh Buttner's Heat is up on the Flotrack site.

    http://ireland.flotrack.org/coverage/249572-IAAF-World-Junior-Championships-2012/video/646842-800m-W-R1-h5-Siofra-Cleirigh-Buttner

Nasty tangle with the African girl.. Lucky she wasnt taken out.

Five europeans and an american in the final - that is a change in the demographic makeup of a championship 800m final. Jessica Judd is also eligible for the race in 2014; she really is a superb prospect. Just out of interest when was the last time that an 800m final at a global championship did not contain a kenyan or Ethiopian in the start list? I was stunned that they were run out of it.

I think Ajee Wilson will win and the Briton's will take one medal - most likely Jessica Judd.

Adam Gemili (GBR) wins the 100m in 10.05 with a wind reading of +0.1. Looks a real prospect, hopefully he will be a promising british junior to make the senior grade.

Angelique Strachan (BAH) won the womens 100m in 11.20 and looks potentially a really good sprinter.

Didn't he move because he was released? It only takes one manager to reckon that speed will make up for lack of ability:rolleyes:

He played at Chelsea and Reading and was let go a few years ago. Moved to league one and didnt make the grade there either.

Not saying he wont be late developer but think 100m is his thing.

Need more than speed in soccer, Ronaldo, van persie and others would run 100m in between 10.5 - 10.9.

Lets hope he stays in running as be good to see his progress

Well his point is that they're exceptional football who are considered extremly fast yet wouldn't be anything close to any decent sprinters (never mind Olympic class).

Gemili may become an exceptional sprinter but he'll probably never be good enough to play professional football. His speed doesn't overcome the rest of his shortcomings

A lot of US sprinters also play US football at the NCAA level but there's more to being a running back or wide receiver than straight line speed.

And of course to reach the top of the sprinting tree, they have to dedicate themselves wholly to it

Yeh I agree. I just tend to take these figures thrown out like that with a grain of salt. I severely doubt that Messi and Ronaldo would be breaking 11 seconds for 100m, not that they really need to anyway.

Don't want to derail the thread here. Does anybody know if Kate Veale is eligeable to compete at the World Juniors again in 2 years time? We must remember that she was competing against many girls older than her in Barcelona. She's no doubt disappointed but the experience will be invaluable to her future development.

No I'm pretty sure she is not eligible in 2014. She is junior next year though.

    Bob Hayes?

Soccer training is substantially different from sprint training. It doesn't really lend itself to pure speed, whereas American football training, particularly for certain positions does.

Hehe. And Dennis Rommedahl ran faster than the Danish 100m record, or so the deluded fanboys of premier league soccer would have us believe.

A guy called Yordan O'Farrill won the men's high hurdles. He's from Cuba!

There was a Jamaican called Murphy in the men's 100m. :D

Hamza Driouch won the 1500 by throwing in a 52.71 second 3rd lap. Pretty sensational. I hope the Qataris are celebrating the success of their great underage athletics program......
