I want to know if anybody has encountered this problem with the VW Passat 2006 1900 Diesel. It does not happen every time though. Recently when I tried to start the VW Passat it started but died immediatly. This would happen 2 to 6 times, then ran bother. I brought it to a garage who put it on diagnostics and was told the ignition switch was faulty and needed to be replaced. One thing that bothers me is that every time it occoured the pre-heater (glow plug?) indicator would appear on the dash display. Does the switch need replacement or is the preheater faulty. I need advice on this as I believe a new switch is €400-€500.

Most likely the ignition switch. Should cost around €350.

Thanks George, Just trying to get some idea of what it might be.
Do you have any idea if it OK for a non VW dealer to fit the switch. A Citreon dealer.
I have heard that you have to go to a main dealer because the key has to be replaced.

Very very few garages apart from main VW dealers will have the equipment to code the new part.

    Where are you located?
