    Hi folks,

You know the proceedure where they put a thin tube down your throat to have a look.

A friend of mine is getting this done tomorrow, and will be offered a choice of either sedation or some kind of local anaesthetic to the back of the throat. (sounds horrible)

My friend is a nervous wreck at the best of times, panic attacks etc. so am I right in thinking that the sedation option is the best one for him as he should be very relaxed and might not even remember it being done.

Sedation. Really no other option in my opinion.

Essentially you are asleep. You remember nothing.

yup that's what I was thinking as its kind of a no brainer really.

Had a colonoscopy myself few months back and remember every bit of it as I watched the whole thing on screen and could talk to the doctor/nurse, turn this way, turn that way etc.

But thank god I didn't have a care in the world as obviously I was just nicely under but coherent.

I had it done about 12 years ago when I was 17, i went with just the local anaesthetic, it was grand & I wasn't completely out it for the day! If she's the panicy type though then she'd probably be better off been out cold for it!!

Same here, just had the local so I could drive home.

    It was fine.

Had it done myself, and opted for the local aneasthetic. Its really not all that bad, just uncomfortable.

The doctor on the day told me the sedation wasn't a great option as you are not fully knocked out...you'd still be aware of whats going on as you're required to still function to get the scope down your throat.

And as the others mentioned, its good to be able to get up and go home after. You'll just have a sore throat/chest for a few hours.

The worst part is seeing the camera/tube...it was a hell of a lot bigger than I imagined haha
