Road Positioning Question

    Hi All,

My instructor says that while driving on a road that has marked parking spaces on the side, it is ok to drive through these if they are unoccupied in order to keep as far left as possible. I was not doing this as i thought it would be incorrect to treat a designated parking space as part of the main road?? But he said that I was not making proper use of the road and by not using them my road positioning was incorrect and too far right. Anyone any thoughts on this?

The most severe type of accident with another vehicle is a head-on collision, so this is what you need to avoid most.

At the same time, do not hog the gutter if possible - a pedestrian may unexpectedly step off the footpath. You will also need to give cyclists and others space.

Note that as the driver is to one side of the vehicle (unless it's centre-drive like a tractor), the perception of road position can be skewed. It may be useful to find a quiet road with centre markings and step outside the vehicle and see the space to the left and right.
