Dublin to Moville, Co Donegal - route recommendation?

Driving this route Tuesday and returning Friday. Have no experience of any of the roads other than M1 to Belfast and M22 to Randalstown, or the N6 past Boyle.

As I see it, three possible routes:
    1) M1 to Belfast, A6 to Derry and then North to Moville. 329km and Motorway/Dual Carriageway for the vast majority of the route
    2) Similar to above, but head North West out of Newry and come around the west side of Lough Neagh to hit the A6. 295km
    3) M1 to Newry, then head for Armagh and Omagh hitting Derry from the South. 297km

#1 Seems the obvious choice from a stress free and time point of view, but aside from the stunning views of Lough Neagh seems a bit boring. Wouldn't mind passing through some scenic areas etc.

    Any suggestions/comments?

I wouldn't use any of those at all - have found that M1/NI M2/A6 is often much slower than M1/N2/A5 to Derry. I definitely would not even consider option 2 or 3.

If you want to go A6 look in to the Greencastle ferry to go across the top of Lough Foyle rather than dropping south again and dealing with Derry City.

Would be hitting Belfast around 2pm and aiming to reach the Derry ring road a good bit before 4pm, figured traffic wouldn't be too bad based on the couple of times I've had to head north out of Belfast!

N2 would be a big saving in distance, but the idea of 200km of single carriageway N-Road puts me off a little. Won't be leaving until 3ish on the Friday, so I think your suggested route might be the one for heading home at any rate, ta!

I know someone from Strabane and they go via your 3rd choice.

I used to do that. I made this journey regularly and I believe it was the quickest. That was before any of the N2 / M2 upgrades of the last 5 years though!

Joined the M50 at Firhouse just before 4pm on Tuesday, arrived in Moville at 7:15 using option 1). Pretty happy with that progress!

Quite a few people from Moville area travel the Belfast route to Dublin these days, I do it myself regularly.
