    94 Corolla CV joint/s

    Have the NCT coming up.

    When he turns right sometimes there's a grating noise.

    I believe it's the CV joint.

    My question is, is it the front right joint that needs replacing or the left,

    and could it be a DIY job, and if not what would that cost?

    best and cheapest test - let it nct guys tell you. just before nct, make sure all liquids at recommended level. all lights working, and air pressure in tires are correct.
    I am going from that point, that on such old car you cant make everything perfect, before nct. even if you do it, and you think it is perfect, in nct they'll find something to fail. Save a money, get full report from nct what needs to be fixed, fix and pass nct.

    most of the time just like shock absorbers the cv on the left is the first to go,
    but since the car is so old it could be any side.
    you can usually tell what side is gone just by the noise alone.
    another sign is the boot that covers the joint is usually perished or torn, causing the cv to fail.
    perished boots are also a nct fail so there worth checking to.

    Just to add check that all your tyres are E marked and directional tyres are fitted correctly.
    I had a friend fail on that issue recently.

    Thats a good way of doing it, or you can fix all the little things that you know need doing, loose anti-roll bar rubbers and droplinks, lights levelled and all working, tyres all within legal limits etc.
    Then try and get it through first time.
    It works for me.

    yes, agree with you, you can do obvious work, but in this case, op even cant diagnose in which side cv joint gone, and ask is it hard work, so I assume he not familiar with mechanics. if op never done such job, wouldnt advice to do it. let him get fault list in nct, and hand over it with car to good reputable garage.

    I'll take the advice given and put it through the NCT and let them diagnose any faults.
