I got a Lowe Alpine Goretex pro shell jacket off these guys for 180 euro: www.sierratradingpost.com

Exact same jacket was selling at 400 in my local outdoor shop at the time. I think they're based in the states, can have some good deals.

Karrimor gear these days (since Sports Direct bought the name) is utterly awful. It's the standard of Gelert gear now.

    worse than Gelert!

OP, cheap gear is cheap for a reason. if you buy cheap gear from the far east i would lay good money on it being fake.

go on Fleabay, type 'north face jacket' into the search engine and look at all the stuff from China, Hong Kong etc.. 90%+ of that will be not just be fake, but utter tat that will desintigrate in one rainburst.

if you want a bargain, go onto ebay, buy it second hand - however, only buy stuff that is used, has signs of wear on it, and from someone who's feedback says that they sell random stuff, like a normal person looking to get rid of stuff lying around the house, rather than some crook bloke who buys all manner of crap to flog in pubs, on fleabay and at the car boot sale.

good names to look for are Berghaus, Craghoppers, Marmot, Lowe Alpine, Osprey, Deuter, Pod etc... North face make some very good gear, but the number of fakes out there, because of NF's brand recognition, makes buying it in anything other than a legitimate shop something of a gamble.

brand names don't mean the product is good. as I can attest about my fancy down Marmot sleeping bag. total rubbish. best way to find good value for money is to research up and coming companies, learn about construction and material properties, rather than basing judgment on what company has a sticker on what product. nearly ALL of it is made in china anyway. even all those big names. especially the big names.
anyway, the op is obviously looking for more amateur level gear. probably not looking to bivy out in -20 just yet, so this links into the second point.
fit-for-purpose. my boots are 5+ years old, are on their third set of soles, and would cost aprox 250 euro to replace. doesn't matter as they have seen more time in action than you would imagine. perfect boot for me. I wont tell someone looking to do a little bit of light day walking to get them. a light pair of Solomon, or even a cheap pair of Gelert would probably do fine for a season. same with all kit. think "fit-for-purpose".
maybe the right gear for you is some gelert from millets in dublin.
maybe the right gear for you is ex army from endicotts over in england.
maybe the right gear for you is brand leader gear from great outdoors.
it will all work where it is meant to work the majority of times. some of it will sometimes fail due to manufacturing flaws, some of it will fail due to user error, and some of it will fail when put through more than it can be expected to handle. this is across the board with no exceptions.

no matter where you are in the world (with a few notable exceptions) you will be up some cool mountain, or in some desolate wasteland, with all your gucci gear, taking cool nat-geo wannabe shots which you will molest with instagram. you will think you are well rugged... and along will come a herdsman with a stinking wooly jumper, a pair of wellies and jeans. he will be a thousand years old, and you will quite rightly realise you are a twit wrapped in overpriced tayto packets. we are all this twit. the summer day walkers with lidl boots, and the ones with fully sponsored northface gear. .. just some food for thought. hope it makes good reading.

:) well written sir, put a smile on my face!

Rather than big brands I'd suggest you shop by fabric, eg; a decent gore-tex or eVent jacket by a lesser name will serve you better than a TNF Hyvent or a HH Hellytec alternative.

I'm reminded of the story on the tralee mountaineering site of a hike up Mount brandon.
Back in 1954, people’s knowledge of climbing is exemplified by a man who had his best and only suit cleaned for the occasion.
