Surprised that theres not a thread on this already seeing as its the biggest national T & F event of the year........
Anyway the womens 1500 looks set to be interesting, Fionnula Britton is doing this as opposed to the 5000m(strange that theres no womens 10000m race at all).
Mens 5k looks like it'll be a top race, ditto for the 10k. Rathfarnham apparently throwing the kitchen sink at this one.

It will be interesting to See what Dave Campbell does over 10k! ..Are there entry lists up online..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

what's the entry fee for spectators? (is there one?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,396 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

Campbell in the 10k?? I didn't realise he had moved up in distance! I'll be doing the 800 myself tomorrow and 4x400 Sunday. Nationals are always a great occasion and great to be running in front of a big crowd as such! Pity there isn't a full startlist yet!

It must be the only meet in the world where athletes have no idea who they are competing against. No time to devise race plans, strategy on the eve of race.

No idea, bit of a joke really that. AAI seem determined to keep the whole event a secret.

Yeah, but thats par for the course really. I've phoned them up a few times for various queries and was put through to a voicemail box that couldnt take my message because it was full.

Highlights on rte2 sunday night at 11pm.

No wonder the place will be empty with those sort of prices

I think that is a little bit unfair they have been really pushing on there site however no really media exposure for the casual fan I will admit

Just a few articles up on there site about it over the last few days

    Sprints preview:

    Distance preview:
    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=26362

    Throws preview:
    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=26330

    Jumps preview:
    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=26275

Also a history of the championships (running over 140 years:eek:) and roll of honour:
    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=26378

Also looks like steps in the right direction towards trying to appeal to more non participating spectators and juveniles:

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=26301
    and
    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=25826

While still a long way to go (I completely agree entry lists should be a must) there does look to be strides being made which hopefully work to develop the overall weekend as it is a great experience and I would recommend it for anyone in the Area.

Does anyone know whether they will have a stream like many of the AIT hosted events this year (Intervarsities etc). Will be there Saturday after the Clontarf half but am stuck in work on Sunday and would like to watch as there will be some great races (for once I am actually excited moreso by the sprints)

    Double checked emails...
For any of you planning to be at Santry this weekend, there are some
Entry-fee Discount vouchers available, €10 for 2 adults instead of €20 per
    adult
    (Free Entry to Under16s).

Check with your clubs, they might have vouchers available to. 20 is a bit steep alright.

    I think entry is €20

Usually only 10e a day I think 20 is for the weekend. However if you look like a competitor you usually walk right on in. Can never understand this as they can't make huge amounts off this and all it does is turn the casual spectators off and these are the ones which need to be encouraged. We need to get out of the "same old heads at every track and XC competitions" mentality

But thats on their site man, they need to let people know other than the hardcores who'll check the AAI homepage. Theres runners in clubs(our own club included, check the facebook page, not a friggin word about it)who dont even know the national T&F championships are even taking place. AAI need to up their game, the example I gave about the voicemail box being full eptiomises how they run their show.
20 bocker for a ticket is ridiculous aswell.

10 euro a day with the flyer. I've arranged a meeting in a car park with someone who can hook me up :pac:

First of all, I didn't know about it. Then I saw the first post and thought I would go along. Then I saw it was €20 - and won't be going again!

€20 for 2 full days seems very reasonable for the National Finals.
Our county championships were €10 for the two days this year.

Leinster GAA finals €35 this year.
All Ireland final probably be double that.

Rory Chesser mustn't be coming over for the 1500m.

Ok, I see that he is likely to race in the steeplechase.

Sure the price to run a fun run is anywhere between E25 and E40.
These are the National Championships. Support the sport. Be a fan. A local GAA match charge money into championship games.

Complaining that 20 euro is too steep for two days to see Ireland's best track and filed athletes in action. I don't know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭Hard Worker

€20 for the two days is reasonable.
It's a pity these Championships are the second best secret on the sporting calendar ( the National CC being in first place ).
It would be very easy to promote locally at least.

Going to some very competitive races in the Middle distance races.

I think Mooney will win the 1500m but if McBrearty and Trvaers on their A game then it will be close.

Chesser won't be racing Nationals as I think he is heading abroad to race.

Campbell should win the 10k with Brian Maher his closest rival.

Ladies 800m will be one of the best races,Rose Anne Galigan slated the AAI during the year for lack of support and comes into the champs with the fastest time but Siobhan Eviston will be close if she doesnt leave that finishing kick too late.

Mens 800m wide open but watch out for Karl Griffin who Just turned 17 in June. http://www.all-athletics.com/node/430182

Joanne Cuddihy should win the 200m.
Hession v Colvert willbe class in the 200m.

If I had to pay for the two days and can only go see one, and had to pay the same for my son, I wouldn't be going. 10 euro a day for adults, under 16s free is a different matter. (Completely free is better again ;))

But sure we'll see how busy it is. If the place is full at 10 euro a day, they got the prices right.

If you were paying people a tenner a head, the place would not be full. The last time there was even close to a decent crowd was in 2000 with Sonia in form the attraction.

I'm sorry to be missing it anyway. The organization of the Irish Schools champs may put National Seniors to shame but it was always a very enjoyable weekend.

    .

Has anyone seen Campbell run recently. He looks fit on tv?

Running the 10K myself. Gettung lapped by the winner once once and not twice will be a good result

@grmurran, Campbell won 5 miler in RTE BHAA not by much tho, but he is a class athlete, although 10k may test him more..best of luck in it .

Didn't make it there today but will be there tomorrow. Good win by Joanne Cuddihy by all accounts. Colvert was obviously in great form too!!

Anyone know who qualified in the mens and womens 800 and 1500? No heat results on the athletics Ireland site?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,358 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I was there today. No charge. Free in. I enjoyed it.

Jammy git! I paid €30 in, though I had my 3 sons with me and I have 2 day tickets.

Thought this was good value for money.

€10 for a day pass or €15 for the 2 days.
family pass for a day was €15
(and the program is included and a decent read)

and for that you got to see some top class international athletes in action.

Good value when you think the National Juveniles is the same charge and people going to see that (mostly) are going to see their own kids compete.

Spot on. Costs a blinking fortune up and down to Tullamore and then coaches/parents - who subsidise the sport heavily in any case - are robbed of another €10 each time

Hope the weather holds up for everyone tomorrow.

Just jog in the front gate as if you're doing your warm up for your race. I did it 5 years in a row :p

How about comparing Sporting Fingals old Ticket prices? (exact same venue)

In terms of DL looking at Paris you have ticket range from 20-70e for one evening meeting in what would be one of the more expensive cities to watch a meet (excluding the likes of Oslo)

Its about getting your pricing and advertisement right and fail on both.

Two years ago there was great advertisement by woodies for it but now

Jaysus, that looks like the weakest nationals in a long, long time. Removing the need for athletes to compete at Nationals along with having athletes off chasing times and form just decimated the middle distance fields.

The sprints were holding the thing together in terms of quality.

Agree with you 100% but what it did have is soem of the best races eg the mens 1500m must be one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the nationals.

Seems that some athletes even though have no chance of getting an A standard but put a pb over a national champs.

Agreed. Pretty depressing. Weather didn't help. We need to get some prestige back to these champs. Allowing elites not compete will kill the championships. Some events held up but some were bad. An official communication went out to all carded athletes to say to contact HP if they didn't want to compete. Should be the other way around.

You're right, but with the deadline for selection this weekend you can't blame some people for taking a chance on a faster race elsewhere to try get the standard.

On the TV coverage they said she got some kind of slight injury issue/concern during the warm up. Jerry Kiernan was saying that the wet track would have been a major injury risk so close to the Olympics anyway. So, he wasn't surprised she pulled out.

Guys, was yesterday, July 8th, the deadline for getting the qualification standard for London?
