Lads, could anyone gimme a ball park figure on how much a five month old ram lamb is worth. I know there are variables weight etc but an average for scottish blackface ram lambs with the crown jewels in full working order:D:D Thanks.

    Yeah - 100 euro I would say.

But it depends, if he was a nice Ram, and you could see he would grow to be very nice - then maybe a small bit more?

Bit of a side question - at what age will a ram lamb start to work? I always had 7 months in my head, but interested to hear what others say.

Thanks for the replies lads, I was thinking around eighty so would have been a bit low, you've saved me money.

John it's generally accepted that a ram lamb will be able to work at around seven months of age and should cover between fifteen and thirty ewes depending on the situation.

This is going to be my first full breeding season since taking over the place and I will test the market and see if it's worth rearing a few good rams. Be interesting to see how it goes, I don't know what the demand will be, etc. And the mart is not a place I feel comfortable in as it's all new to me.... So here goes

From what I have seen on Marts in last few weeks you would be doing very well to make the 100 euro unless youm are talking about a lamb with quality for breeding.More like the 75 to 80 euro mark for strong horned lambs with nice touch of feeding.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you, moving on three of them next week so will see how the haggling goes (private sale) Have seven others that are fine looking rams and seem promising but will probably bring them on through the winter and see how things are next autumn. Prices are back a bit this year, just to compound the misery!!

Would you squeeze them if you are keeping them over the winter?

Oh fup no, they will be sold as breeding stock later. Just have to keep them away from the ewes and hoggets.

    Ah - breeding stock, sorry.
I had thought that originally, but then when you said you had more of em, I thought maybe they were just ram lambs you were selling for meat.
It's early enough yet, you might sell later on.
Best of luck with em anyways.

Edit - will they be put to work this season? If so - then I think 100 is still realistic? They would be 80 or so for meat, so you would imagine if they for breeding they would carry that extra premium. ???

    Thanks for that John.

I had a figure of a 100 in my head for them but you know yourself, what you have in your head and what you get in your pocket doesn't always correlate!
I castrated the rest of the ram lambs earlier in the year so will need to sell them off in the next month or so as grass is getting tight and it's becoming a bit of a balancing act around here.
I won't work those rams this year but if anyone buys them I imagine they. will be expected to earn their crust straight away.

Tis tough going on the mountain this year.
