    Hello :D

I am planing to open a small company which will deliver alcohol form a local off-license to your doorstep. I have read all the posts in here but all of them are about delivering after 22:00. I would like to deliver until 22:00 only. My question are:

Do I need a license to sell alcohol as a third party ?

Can I just take the order over phone and deliver like taxi drivers do with a service charge. They dont have any licence as far as I know.

    AnybodY ?

Technically you would need an offi license, also you can't deliver outside of off license hours

I'd strongly recommend you speak with a solicitor because you're most likely walking into a minefield of issues and regulations here.

a company near me was doing this, they kept getting pulled by the gardai and the alcohol was confiscated, but they were delivering all hours, they closed in the end. I think they were supplying the alcohol themselves and weren't an official company, so im sure it was dodgy dealings all round.

just be aware that your stock could be confiscated, the loss in one load would be high, id check all legalities to be on the safe side and know your stuff if you are pulled over

I know when I was in Sligo it, there was a delivery service like this, except they would buy anything, like if you wanted a few groceries, a McDonalds and a few cans of beer they would buy them all and arrive at your door with the receipts and charge you a fee on top for the service.
As regards the alcohol, it wasn't handed over until you produced ID, didn't matter if you were obviously nearly 30 or whatever, literally everyone had to produce ID

sounds like it could be more trouble than it's worth.
if it was that straightforward there would have been alot more people providing the service already.

As far as I can see the SALE of alcohol is prohibited after 22.00.

If the sale has gone through a till prior to 22.00 it may be technically a lawful sale.

I think the way to approach this is the customer orders and pays the off licence prior to 22.00 and the delivery fee is included in the transaction.

This way your only involvement is the delivery fee, the transaction is between the customer and the off licence. Keep the receipts.

If this is as simple as it seems, I don't understand why there aren't a multitude of people doing this.

Just found this, so it's a grey area (think casino)

tesco arent able to deliver alcohol before 10:30am, so I think that logic might not be feasable.

Laurels off license in Clondalkin does this. You have to register with them/show proof of ID at the shop and they give you a customer number to quote over the phone when you're ordering.Think they charge €2/3 for delivery on top of the price of the alcohol and you pay the driver.Only the registered person can take the alcohol off the driver and you have to show ID and sign the receipt before they give it to you. They deliver from 5-10pm every night of the week.

It just goes to show that the alcohol can only go through the till during the authorised hours.

No, they're not allowed to pick it off the shelf until authorized hours

Regulations changed last year that's why shops have to block off sections of alcohol now and alcohol can't directly face food products or general groceries now

It'd be very popular on children's allowance day.

Used to do deliveries for a company doing thai food and also alcohol. Drivers had a few sticky situations where they were delivering alcohol to underage house parties chancing their arm that they would get away with it. Another issue arose where we were contacted by a family who's sister had just come out of rehab for alcohol and had ordered a huge amount of drink delivered by us.

Having a situation that its easier to obtain alcohol does not fair well. Steps have been put in place the last few years to try and regulate who alcohol is sold to and make it more difficult to obtain, i.e not buying before 12pm or after 10pm.

Yeah..it just sounds like a recipe for disaster this idea. If it was a good one, then you'd have companies all over the place doing it.

Also, would you really want to be driving around estates delivering booze to mildly/majorly drunk people? :)

You would be almost guaranteed to be robbed at some point also, happens quite a bit with take away drivers, but id say with alcohol the chances are a lot higher!
