Dependent/Independent Mature Student Question

Hi all. As far as it goes I've been living back at my folks house for almost a year while out of work. I'm delighted to say I got the course I wanted and I'm looking forward to getting back out of the countryside and into town to study.

The thing is I'm filling out an application over on studentfinance.ie with regards to getting help with paying reg/tuition fees and I'm wondering how will it effect what's payed if I put down dependent? I look to being independent come September but that isn't the reality yet. I don't want to start throwing around BS or anything. My finances could be better if I'll have to pay the brunt.

The welfare office will be well aware I'm currently living with my parents, I'm sure, and I was also wondering if that might effect BTEA in any way? As I plan to be away I would hope not, but again as I don't fit the criteria for independent at the moment I wonder. This might not be something that even needs addressing, I'm calling into the WO tomorrow to pick up an application.

I tend to get bogged down a bit with this stuff. I don't have too much experience applying for grants and the like. Any attempt to interpret the above muddle is appreciated.

You don't really have a choice as such. If you live at home you are classed as dependent.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I'm aware. I'm wondering how that effects getting a grant. Will I only get a small amount because I'm classified dependent? Sorry the OP is a bit of a muddle.

BTEA won't be effected if you are living with your parents. No clue about grants though.

I emailed susi asking what factors might effect the grant specific to my situation. I should hear back Monday or Tuesday I hope.

Out of curiosity, how did you get on? I think I'm in a fairly similar boat, and it's as confusing as a big old confusing thing. Head's melted. :-(

Sorry for not replying sooner - basically it will depend on the income of your parents.

    What's the issue?
