easier just to ask you guys... not sure if right thread...

    32 yrs old (12 Stone 4)
Did my first real full effort 5 mile timed run today - 35.50
Q: is that good? Should I be chuffed... coz I am but feel free to burst my bubble : )

Q: I never really trained for it just did approx 8-10 slow n easy 4 milers no real effort just cruising... but If I trained hard as I could for rest of year what time could I hope to achieve seeing as I did a 35:50 today (which nearly killed me tbh : ) ?

    cheers in advance

yes it is pretty good actually.

at that rate you would be around 42min for a 10k which is very good running in my opinion ....i have not broke 45min for 10k yet

Have a look at the results from last Saturdays Race Series 5 mile in the Phoenix Pk. That will give you an idea of your standard. Decent club runner will be running sub 30 mins for 5 miles.

We get a question like this every month at least,
I have just run x distance in y time. Is that good?

It's impossible to answer meaningfully. Your time is better than some people run, worse than other people run. What does it matter?

The question you should be asking is,
I have just run x distance in y time - how do I get faster?

Closer to a 45 minute 10k according to McMillan (44:55 to be exact). But still a damn fine run for someone pretty new to running. Get yourself down to a club, and see what you can really do.

hey thanks for all that lads... and as I said I never ran for time before because I always thought a) I wouldn't make a fast runner but had decent endurance (I once got up one morning without training and did 20 miles... 3 hours 20...slow but I did it) and b) No point in asking about times and whats good if I haven't put the effort into training properly for a decent period of time and then doing a race etc.. but now I'm thinkin hell yeah if I can prove to myself I can do a sub 45min 10 k I'm deffo gonna do a few races... cheers lads

    newbies are annoying aren't they ; )

How long is a piece of string?

Depends what you are comparing it to. Compared to Mark Kenneally and Alistair Cragg no it is not good, in fact it is very poor. Compared to others it is seen as superman.

What's my point? Don't mind what others think of your times, and just get out there and improve, for your own pleasure. Nobody else is going to care, good or bad, how fast or slow you run.

Keep it up and have fun.

Probably the first time I have ever wholeheartedly agreed with RayCun :D

    ****, better say something controversial...

Seriously though, if you want to find out if your time is good, don't post on an internet forum. Go out and run a race. When you cross the finish line, look at the people you beat, and the people who beat you, and then you'll know how good your time was.

Yeah ok I suppose the shapers were gona come out in the end... I was just askin if 35:50 was good for a 5 mile... and now it's a stupid question and prob not inclined to pass by here in future but hey we live and we learn. Thanks for the informative ones though.

I like these questions, and I like that you have included your age and weight etc. It's just over 7 min mile pace. Nothing great, but not bad either. I did a 5 k in 18 min 57, so just under 6 min mile pace. Again, nothing great, but happy with it. Not sure if I could manage that pace for the almost two extra miles in a 5 mile run.

I am sure you will get even faster and maybe in a few months with training you can go maybe 6 mins 30m pace which would be a great improvement.

BTW, other info like general fitness levels and BMI maybe? Are you tall and lean, short, overweight etc?

You seem offended, but I think that everyone here has given good advice and positive advice.

    To summarize what was said

Its a good time for someone with not much training
its a mistake to compare yourself to others too much anyway
It is impossible to say how much you can improve in a year
Get out there and enjoy your running

to add to all of that....

You will not improve by just running a few times a week, and you might get frustrated.

Join a club, or read up on novice 10k training plans and put a proper plan in action, Enter some races and you'll catch the bug....
