    Hey guys,

I am new to Boards and I just got my mature place on the Vet Nursing course! I am so so happy. I am just wondering if there are any more mature students who will also be starting in Sept? I am coming from Wexford and would like to get to know others as soon as possible! I am 25 years old and my name is Lisa. :)

So let me know and I hope you all got what you want!

hey, nice to meet you, I have 5 years experience working in veterinary practices and I have also done volunteer work. I know a girl who did the course and is now a head nurse in a veterinary practice. She said it was a great course and the lecturers are really nice and very helpful.

I think I am going to move up... it would be too expensive to travel up and down from Kildare... ye ive heard really good things about the course.. I know two girls going into second year and two nurses who have studied there..

Ive done two animal care course so Ive about two years of experience...

What type of accommodation are you going for?

I am hoping to get somewhere that is owner occupied, as I would rather a quiet house for study, but is self catering not digs. How about yourself?

Im not sure really... I was looking at some of the students villages... That type of housing does sound good... I need some where that isn't going to cost a bomb... poor student :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 pandabear55

I know the feeling, I am the same. Well the student villages I heard can be messy as a lot of parties, as have younger students living there. Not saying I dont like to party, just not every night of the week LOL... Just have a good look around, check daft.ie and the student accommodation list for 2012-2013 is available at the moment, just contact the student union in AIT and will email you one.. Its handy as show how much you pay weekly and what it includes in the rent..

I called into AIT today and got the accommodation list. It's very handy. I've already done the vet nursing course though. I stayed in digs last time and it was great tbh but this time I'd love to have my own space if you get what I mean. If everything works out for my I'll be doing the veterinary practice management course this September. :)

Hi Jane, just wondering when did you do your work placement in 1st year or does it vary every year? They told me at the interview it is a 10 week block...

    Thanks

Your work placement for 1st and 2nd year will be in an 8 week block over the summer holidays.

Work placement starts generally the week after you finish your final written exams, probably first/second week in April as far as I remember.

That is a very good book. I did buy it but I don't think it was in the library when I was there so that's why. I say save up a bit here and there and get it for reference. No need to buy it now if it's in the library. :)

Hi Ill be starting vet nursing in september I have a few questions ...

does anyone know is the course 9-5 monday to friday school type set up or is it like ucd type where you might have a day off during the week or days off early?

also when do we find out about placement dates when do exams usually finish can it be any vets or does it have to be specific vets?

also is it a nice course to do or is it very hard, diffuclt exams etc?

any info would be really appriciated :)

Your timetable will vary but you probably be in for at least 9-4. Lectures finish early on a Friday.

Exams will usually finish mid may. You will then have placement from the end of may to the end of July. You can choose where you want to do your placement.

If you enjoy science ( chemistry & biology) you will enjoy it plus you'll get to do the nursing based subjects.

You will need to work hard though. In second year we had 25 exams and 11 assignments all together !

Congratulations on getting in, I'm going into 3rd year and I'm a mature student too. If you are looking fora quiet place to live, keep away from the student apartments. I used Daft and that worked for me :)

I bought it because they don't have many copies in the library and when you have an assignment you have to be quick or the few copies will be gone before you get there. It's really useful to have when you are writing up your case studies during work placement and you have no access to the library. I bought it from the bookdepository.com and I think it was 10 euro cheaper there.

If you have the funds buy the book. it will help you with all subjects and the 3 they have in the library and to be shared between all years so its rarely there. I'm a mature student too and Cypres Gardens is a good estate. 50/50 families students so its quiet.
Im headen into 3rd year and when I was meant to start there was meant to be 5 mature students 5 fetac and the rest leaving certs....it was the other way around with only 5 LC. but when you get into it all ages get along and we all help each other out.
Have a great time and enjoy
OH AND AVOID ANY ADDRESS WITH WILLOW....STUDENT VILLAGE=NO STUDY

OH NEWBIES THE TIMETABLE IS UP ALREADY.
if you go to www.ait.ie current students : timetables and calenders: course timetable : life and physical science and you'll see al_nvetn 1 there's an A and b. A is first half of alphabet, B second! enjoy and dont be scared:eek: it will change for the forst few weeks
    http://timetable.ait.ie/students.htm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 pandabear55

How come there is an A and B timetable, both are slightly different!! Ugh confused??? : )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭Irishchick

Because the class will be spilt into A & B (and possibly c) in alphabetical order.

I have a collection of veterinary books. Its small at the min but Im constantly adding to it.

If anyone wants access to it pm me for details.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 pandabear55

ah.. cheers thanks for that info. did not realise, there would be a divide in the class. : )

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,623 ✭✭✭thegreatgonzo

You are only divided for practicals, you'll be with the rest of your class for lectures. Actually for the science subjects you will probably have to share the large lecture halls with other science students. When I was in first year we didn't do that but they brought it in last year. Personally I don't like it but some people do.
