Donore or not Donore...?

I asked this question here - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056672729&page=2 - but hoping to get a response by starting a new thread so I'll just ask here.

I've decided to join a club and I've been thinking that Donore is probably the best option for me as I do all of my running in the Phoenix Park, so it's only a short hop from there. They also have their own track.

If any Donore people can share their experience of the club with me, by PM or on thread, I'd really appreciate it. Can I use the track on my own (I mostly train in the mornings)? What are the expectations with regard to running races, etc? Is there a good spread of standards? What are the coaches like?

Clonliffe is possibly an option for me too, if anyone from Clonliffe wants to chip in!

    Thanks...

Background - male, 36 and really interested in improving my marathon and half-marathon times by running with other people. I've been running - on and off - the past couple of years and have completed two marathons (both just under 3 hours), on about 35 miles per week. I'd like to get to low 2:50s this autumn and am hoping regular training with a club can help push me on in terms of mileage and speed.

    Hey Sacksian,

I run with Donore. There's generally no pressure for anyone to run races they don't want to run. Donore are essentially a cross country club and the focus of training for a lot of people is aimed around XC season - you may be asked to be on teams at that time. That being said, there are great marathon runners in the club and by aiming for 2:50ish you definitely would not be training alone if you needed training partners. We always have a training group for DCM so there's good guidance there and a good group to work with from newbies to experienced marathon runners.

Ian and John Downes coach the lads and they have their 3(?) structured sessions a week with different plans for people with different goals.

You can use the track on your own. During the kids training times, they have priority so you'll need permission to use a lane then but other than that you can use it once you're a member.

Thanks a million for that - really helpful.

I bought a pair of spikes earlier in the year to run around the Munich Hills in the park so I'd be well up for cross country, once the marathon's out of the way!
