Where to start?! part time self employed

My partner and I are saving for a deposit on our house, I have a good job, although my salary has been cut, but my partner works as a tiler/floor layer. He has been working for the same company for 13 years (since he qualified) and in in the past year he has been cut down to a 3 day week (like so many others)

He was getting SW assistance for the 2 days a week that he doesn't work, however they have cut that from him now. There just doesn't seem to be any full time jobs out there in his line of work. He has spoke to his boss and going back on a 5 day week looks like it will be a long way down the road.

In the mean time he is thinking about becoming self employed part time. He really doesn't know where to start. We have read a few things online and that, but it just seems like going around in circles. Is it even possible to do this? If so how does he go about it.

    Thanks a million folks!
