Quick Handicap Question

Hi all. I started my last comp on Saturday 30th June on 9.4, and didn't return a card, so I will get .1 back (presumably). If this is the case, presumably I should now play off 10 in my next comp, even if GolfNet is not updated with Saturday's score. Is this right?

I believe that for handicap adjustments, the .1s only take effect at month end, whereas when you lose shots it takes immediate effect. Is this correct?

    TUT TUT!!

No. You can only downward adjust your handicap and not upwards. And 0.1's come into effect nearly immediately after a competion unless it was an away event which can take a few days.

charlieIRL - thanks for the response, but I'm no clearer on where I stand after reading your answer. I asked two questions and you have one answer "No".

And your explanation (for whichever question, I'm not sure) seems to be contradictory, you say you cant adjust your handicap upwards, but that .1s come into effect nearly immediately.

Maybe I should simplify this. What handicap should I play off this afternoon?

Yeah you must wait for the 0.1 to come through the system, you cannot self-adjust upwards as has been said. Not handing in a card in a qualifying competition is bad form in my opinion. CSS gets calculated based on player scores, as do Hole Indexes etc. By not handing in your card you're skewing things. They are clamping down on this at my club.

I didnt hand in my card because I had an eleven and when I lost two balls after that I decided against going back to the tee. The guy marking my scorecard stopped marking it after the first lost ball, so I was not bothered entering it into the computer. Lucipher is no doubt preparing for my reception at the gates of hell/

And if there's 10 people that do that on the day you think that's right and fair for everyone ?

People that enter a competition, need to hand in the cards, however bad they are. Cards that have not been handed in deserve a penalty of some sort.

Medal was it? You can still punch in your score as far as 11 and then put N/R and pop the card in.

That's news to me - 0.1's should come through pretty quickly. Usually if you score outside your buffer on a Sunday you would have the 0.1 in Golfnet a few days later. Was it home or away?

You are still playing off 9.4 then unless it has been changed on golfnet.
Text your GUI number to 086 383 2600, then you'll know.

No probs, sorry if i wasn't clearer.
It seems contradictory but you can only downward adjust a handicap. Doesn't seem fair but thats the rules!

    Yes, more than likely.

No, you should play off 9.4 until its changed on Golfnet.

No, 0.1 can be added back within a few hours of the competition ending - depends on how quick the club uploads the scores / results.

    It was a home comp.

So if there is some systems issue or someone forgets to enter it into GolfNet or something, I play off the incorrect handicap? I thought the bottom line was that we're all responsible for our own handicap.

I'm not defending not entering my card & I understand I still could have done so. I know I should do it and I have had worse scores than I had on Saturday and entered it, I usually do. I feel ashamed having read all your comments

And thus solves the metaphysical question of what purgatory is...perhaps it will be something like playing infinite rounds, always starting well, strokes, captains prize maybe, and continually finishing poorly to lose by a shot.

with it being a home competition it should have went up fairly quickly.

You will not be penalised for playing off a lower handicap but will be excluded if you play off a higher one.

i'd check golfnet the night before the next competition and if its not changed maybe play off the 9.4 just in case.

For me it's getting to the tee but not being able to take a backswing, continuously trying to find an area on the teebox where there is room to swing but never finding one.

Will do. Am playing this avo at home in a team comp thing, hoping that I wont get the .1 ever, so I stay off 9, but would like it for this avo if it is going to come at some stage anyhow!

Ooh I have had that dream/nightmare.

And the one where there is a big drop in front on the tee box and I am too scared to swing for fear of falling off the tee box. That says a lot about my balance.

You card would still have counted for handicapping purposes.
Clause 19 adjustment, you just would have received 0 stableford points for the holes you didnt finish.
Always enter your card or you are impacting everyone.

FYI I dont just mean for 0.1 purposes, if you were 6 under for the other 17 holes you would still have been cut.

Yeah, aware of that too thanks....

Knowing that I was on 9.4, I broke my ass trying to get back into it after an 11 on a par 4 4th. Was going ok too, back to level 2s until two lost balls left me a little frustrated having hit decent shots off both. Both partners neither bothering to watch or assist looking for my balls did not help the mood.

Yeah I hate when my partner doesnt watch my balls....errr....I mean...err

Honestly though, terribly annoying when this happens....especially on sunny days.
    - "Crap, anyone see that?"
    - "sorry no" => because I wasnt arsed watching
    - "no missed that one" => because I was fecking around with my bag

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,528 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

As annoying as them not watching is when they couldn't give a cr@p helping you look for the ball....that drives me mad, because I'd help someone like it was my own ball...golf ball, you know.

Going slightly more off topic for one post.........the 12th in Moate on a summers evening is a bitch - playing directly into the sun. The amount of times i'd hit a slightly right drive and not find a ball and nobody seen it would drive you nuts.

Lads not even helping look though, now thats bad form. Why are you out for a round with these guys???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,528 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

I'd put my name on the timesheet when I want to play, and end up with whoever...mostly it results in meeting new members and having an enjoyable round.

That said, I think it also affects concentration in a bad way, as in you are trying to get to know people/have a laugh with strangers, which takes more time & effort, than it would to knock it around with your mates.
