whats the story, do I just turn up or do i have to arrange an appointment? What kind of fee is involved?

does anyone know what kind of money is involved if you want to get a car serviced beforehand. how do you avoid garages getting you to replace parts that may not need replacing but they want to get a s much money out of you as possible or is this an issue?

should the oil be changed completely or just topped up?

You need to make an appointment here : http://www.nct.ie/ retest should be free within 30 days unless there's equipment involved (ie. free if they can visually verify something has been done, like lights etc.)

With regards to servicing most people will likely tell you to just bring it for the test, if it fails have the items that it has failed on addressed, that way you will definitely avoid any unnecessary work being done. (unnecessary for the NCT that is, doesnt mean that you might not have to do it anyways)

Just regards servicing. Idealy your car being serviced should have absolutely nothing to do with NCT. I.e. idealy you should be servicing it per the manufactures specifications & not when the NCT is due. When servicing, oil should be drained & changed completely. But you should also think of your air filter, fuel filter, coolant, brake fluid, gear oil, do you know when any of this was last done & the intervals they should be changed? Again this is nothing to do with the NCT. The cost of servicing depends on whats due, the cost of parts; whether you use genuine parts or spurious, how much oil & other fluid the car actually takes & what quality of said oil you put in. Labour depends on where you go but budget 50/hr. Amount of hours will vary from minimum half an hour to 2 or 3 depending on much your getting done.

The only thing id suggest getting done specifically beforehand is your tracking & headlight alignment. Don't mention your NCT'ing the car and say no if your asked if its going. Personally id have had the headlights at least done with the last service anyway myself(which is ever 6 months or 15k km's)so it would be already fine for the NCT.

But sure also this is ireland where your lucky the oil isnt pure sludge in the engine & sure wont it be grand. ;)
