I am setting up this thread for all grads looking for training contracts? The market seems to be very limited at the moment and maybe we can use this site to help each other out posting new vacancies and talking about different interviews and offers???

Da Bomb, assume your looking for an ACA contract, have you contacted the institute. They normally produce a list of practices offering graduate positions.

I was in a similar position in 2003(god so long ago now) but I had pre signed a training contract and missed out on one exemption and offer was withdrawn. Didn't know where to look and the institute sent out a detailed listing by county of practices looking for people, so I literally contacted every practice on the list and got a lot of interviews and offers.

In the end did the exam for the exemption I missed out on externally, passed it and got a job offer on far better terms. And they didn't mind the exemption I missed out on.

    Best of luck searching

I have been helping a number of different people on boards.ie with relation to their CV and finding training positions.

I have a list of all the practices in the greater Dublin area. Its a zipped file with all the practices broken down by Dublin postcode, with contact numbers, websites etc. If anybody would like a copy, please pm me.

Regarding advice for Trainee looking to get roles, I generally give this advice and it does work.

    1. Get your CV and cover letter right. Again if you want advice, pm me and I will come back to you.
    2. Apply to those roles that are on websites, irishjobs, ICAI etc. These roles will get huge responses, and competition is tough, so your profile needs to be right. If (when) you dont hear back its important to contact the HR person, either by phone or email (phone is best). If its been 4/5 weeks, be honest with them and say I submitted my Cv on this date and that you haven't heard back, that you are very interested in the position and its a good fit with where you want your career to go. If you are immediately available, make that very clear, making the point that if the position was still open, you could interview any day this week. (You would be amazed how many times in the first round of interviews how often people drop out and they are looking for people to fill spots).
    3. If you don't get through on the phone, leave a message or a voicemail and very importantly follow this up with an email referring to the voicemail/message you just left.
    4. At regular intervals, probably 10 days, repeat the process (if you haven't heard back).
    5. If you do get a negative response, thank them for their time and ask them to keep your CV on file.
    6. After being rejected, within larger firms, at 6-8 week periods (without being annoying), contact the HR person to let them know that you are still available and looking for work. Again, phone is best, followed by an email. Vary the intervals.....but basically you want to send pleasant emails to the hiring manager where it gets to the point that if another role comes up, they will remember you and get in contact. Persistance works!!!!

Finally, keep a record of where your cv has gone. Set up a basic excel spreadsheet to record where you have sent your cv, what date, the result etc. Again, if someone wants a spreadsheet, we have one here, just pm me.

Best of luck! Its very tough out there, but you need to get yourself as many chances as possible, be proactive and understand that looking for a job, is a job in itself :)

You should try the big 4 again...they sometimes hire again if all their graduate positions haven't been filled.
