Is my Ps3 busted

After a very negative experience with Sony Ericcson this year, my sentiments towards Sony have dipped further tonight.

After watching a DVD and playing some tiger woods, my ps3 prompted me to install update to version 4.2.

    Fine, I let it.

Not fine - the ps3 no longer plays any disc. Not games, Blu rays or DVDs. There is no error message or anything or yellow light of death.

Just nothing - it sucks the disc in and doesn't spin up.

    This is a totally un-modded 74GB PS3.

I just formatted the hard drive then did a 'restore ps3 system' to default settings.

Now - this is hardly a bloody coincidence. Zero trouble ever reading discs and boom - no functionality after an update.

    Any suggestions here?

    Thanks folks,
    Quad

I had the same thing after an update a couple of years ago with my Fat PS3, when playing the first game after the update, crashed and couldnt recover. Tried swapping out the hardware with another PS3 (same model, bought in the same store at the same time!) that had the exact same problem at the same time. Couldnt repair myself. Followed videos fro youtube describing how to repair step by step with no joy.

But there are repair people out there that can sort this out.

There seem to be alot of accounts from people that have this happen after certain updates.

It is a bit suspicious that the disc instantly and totally stops working immediately after the update.

Not that Sony are going to care when it's out of warranty.

Boom_bap: you don't remember which videos you watched online, do you? Might give them a try.

Sent an email to consolerepairs.ie to see how much they would charge.

My 80gb fat boy stopped working after an update around october last year. It was working perfectly, then for some reason I went into the check for system updates menu and there was one available. The update would only install so far and then I'd get an error message.
Googled the error and it was a hardware error, common in YROD repairs, but mine never had YROD, never even been opened. The only solution I could find was to sent it to sony for diagnostic. Cheaper to buy a new PS3 :(
If anything happens again I'm definitely bringing it to a console repair guy.
