Used SUV / Car Recommendations ?

    Hi All,

The second car, that the missus mostly drives, is due for a change.

(I've a bog standard diesel for work that I'm keeping, but I wouldn't mind something a bit more respectable/interesting for the weekends/evenings etc.)

This time I'm thinking of an SUV for a change, but I'm open to other suggestions

    Budget is 7-11k max

Don't really want any audi/BM/mercs etc.
(Don't want people to think we're loaded and therefore easy to fleece / overcharge when we drive up in a Beemer/Audi/merc etc., you know what Ireland is like, plus you always get fleeced on parts and servicing for driving that type of motor, been there done that, bought the T-Shirt)

Must be 2006 on, and something reasonably reliable / not too hard to sell on.

I don't mind petrol as she only does about 8k miles a year

I don't even mind taxing up to 2.5 litres

    Thanks in advance.

    Burt.

You won't get much of an SUV up to 2.5 litres. What exactly are you looking for, something that can actually go off road or just something with the appearance of something that can go offroad?

Define interesting. What does she currently drive?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 182 ✭✭Burt Lancaster

Just something with the appearence that can go off road.
If it was going to be off road, I'd look for a proper off roader, but the fact is it never will be.

Intresting as in anything more intresting than a corolla, that should make it easy for ya.

We're not that hard to please

Something along the lines of the Kia Sorento, or Hyundai Santa Fe MkII, but I don't know if they are any good or not.

    Land Rover Discovery 3

    Full Fat Range Rover

    Landcruiser.

Any of the above would do fine

OP wants up to 2.5 only. The above are too big

Over 2.5 is not a complete dealbraker, but it would want to be reflected in the price to make the extra tax worthwhile, plus I want to have some hope in selling it on again.

The only 4x4s you'd want to be looking at would need to be above 2.5 in order to be worthwhile. Anything below that is just a toy.

Above 2.5 4x4s more than likely will be more comfortable and if you buy right will have more extras as they are more expensive new.

As I said we're not that hard to please, and as explained it does not have to be a proper off roader, I'm past the pretend Rambo / pretend property developer stage. We don't do any farming, we won't be off road, and we don't need to tow anything.

The Kia sorento or nissan pathfinder are really the only 2.5 propper 4x4s out there , and watch the pathfinder as flywheel / clutch issues seem to hit those and the navara if you go for the manual.

I had a sorento for almost 2 years and loved it, it was a great car and bulletproof reliable aswell, a load to be found with leather, auto, climate, heated seats.

Thanks, the bolded is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for.
4x4 would be handy for the odd bit of snow every 5 years, but other than that its not really that essential.

unfortunatly with your budget you wont quite afford any of the pretend suv things that appeared around 07 , but because people are afraid of the tax theres plenty of propper 2.5+ litre 4x4s going cheap.

Cheap sounds good. I don't mind going over 2.5 litre if its real value for money.

    Any reccomendations ?

The sorento is pretty good value , you might get a decent deal on a 3.0 landcruiser or a 3.2 pajero either .

you said she does 8k miles a year , if you can face the cost then theres savage value to be found in 4.4 V8 petrol X5's and range rovers , lovely to drive, buckets of power, people are just afraid of the tax

Aye 8k a year opens up the options all right. Would they manage 30mpg on a long run ?

My woman wants an SUV for her next car. I keep telling here if she wants a proper one it's gotta be at least 3L otherwise it's pretty much a toy as an earlier poster said above. Of course she doesn't want to go that league due to tax, etc and the fact that we already have two V8's as it is along with her own car. I would like her to get an E46 320 Cab that I wouldn't be embarased driving in myself on a nice sunny day.

I went off topic there didn't I? Does it HAVE to be a SUV OP? How about an A4 / A6 Avant Quattro? Oh you said no Audi's either didn't you? Well I guess I'm no help then! :o

    EDIT: Forgot to say M3 / MX5 / Octavia!

I'm coming round to that idea.
What would you reccomend for her SUV wise yourself then ?
( I don't want anything crazy flash in case the neighbours think I'm a boldholder, a gangster, or in NAMA. )

from a lot of US forums they seem to be quoting 25 US mpg highway , which is 30 UK mpg , so yeah id say youd see 28-30 if you werent horsing it. (bmw / range rover)

the sorento will do 31-32 on a long run , the landcruiser will do 30 motorway if your easy on her

I'm the wrong man to ask TBH. I buy with my heart not my head. I would only be suggesting a Ford F150 or the likes. Eric on the other hand is the man to ask. ;)

Ok some of you have talked me into looking at bigger than 2.5 lt.

If she's doing only about 8k a year are these smart enough buys, would servicing and parts be affordable ?

I think we are all grown ups here. No need to be assoiciating a car with any type of people.

like other posters said they are only worth your time if you go 2.5 or over.

If you dont do any farming, wont be going off road and dont need to tow anything may I ask why you want a 4x4?

I'm trying to offer you my advice. That is to buy a proper one, otherwise your only fooling yourself... and would be better off in a estate or something or similar.

    Best of Luck
