Sim free 4s gets locked to network?

    Hi,

My 4s got stolen and my house insurance is sending me a cheque for a replacement. I was thinking I'd buy a sim free one so that its easier to sell when the 5 comes out.
I called carphone warehouse earlier and they told me that iphones become locked to whatever network the first sim put into it is on. I thought this was nonsense but have since been told by a friend who worked in vodafone that this happened all the time!

Can anyone confirm that this is true? Seems to defeat the whole point of buying sim free if it is...

PS I did a search and couldnt find any answer on this.

    Thanks.

You can only buy a sim free iPhone from Apple direct.

Not sure if carphoneware house sell unocked iphones, the best bet is to order directly from apple online. You will get it within a few days and if you use fat cheese you get % off
