Hey, just got call from car service, I left my car there last friday, they said the whole power steering system has to be replaced, part costs around 400 euro from Opel + import + tax + other **** costs mechanic said it's not worth for my 2001 car, he said the total fix will cost over 1500 euro inc. parts and workhours. The problem is very little tbh: When turned off, steering wheel stays straight as should, when ignitioned on the steering wheel drops very very very little to left. So when I drive and let steering wheel go it goes to left a little bit. So if I drive straight in lane and let steering go, it will change lane to left in about 10 seconds, so not too strong to the left. I am learner and I got driving test in about 2 weeks, NCT is still up until 2013 April. Think it's okay if I at least pass test on it and perhaps can hold until next NCT?

You can buy another 01 Corsa for less than €1500 so spending that kind of money on repairing one is crazy. Are those main dealer prices? If so then get an opinion and price from a recomended independant garage. I would not go near a main dealer with an 11 year old car. I definately would not leave it as it is as it could completely fail and cause you to lose control of the car.

Perhaps you can suggest some place I could go and check in Dublin? as close to city centre as possible?

Got to local garage, get used bits from a breaker and bobs your uncle. Is it the steering rack that is being changed? I wouldnt drive this at all in current condition.

Probably OK to drive slowly but I wouldn't be continuing to use it normally.

Only if you can persuade everyone else coming the other way to drive slowly!

OP dont spend €1500 (or €500) on a 2001 car... buy another that works.

Well to be honest I just need this car to pass my driving test next week, then I will get around 1000 euro refund from my insurance as they promised, I don't really see big chance of me changing car right now.

Rent a car from a driving school to do the test in, then buy a car with your refund (assuming you pass).

Mechanics said getting this part from scrapyard can be pretty easy and pretty cheap nearly free, but mechanics said they are official parts only like, so they won't install used parts. Any suggestions?

    Use a different garage.
