    Hi all,

I'm near Ballinasloe this Saturday with a mate and we'd like to play an open competition but for the life of me I can't find one. I've called all the following clubs:-

    Athlone
    Ballinasloe
    Loughrea
    Currawest
    Mountbellew
    Galway Bay
    Mullingar
    Roscommon
    Glasson
    Moate

Any ideas??? We're willing to drive 45 mins to an hour max from Ballinasloe.

    Ben

Surely there's one on in Athlone and Moate? Did you try Esker hills or tullamore?

    Hi Charlie,

Definitely no open competition in Athlone. I couldn't get through to Moat but their diary has nothing listed for the 6th. Esker Hills has a 3 ball rumble but....it's a rumble :-( We want to play proper golf.

Didn't try Tullamore, will give them a call in the morning. Any other suggestions?

Just called Moate, Mount Temple and Tullamore. Definitely no open competition in Moate or Mount Temple. Pro shop closed in Tullamore, will call in the morning.

Really scratching my head here!! Would love to play Esker Hills but can't bring myself to play a Rumble

I agree, I've played it several times but really can't waste a round of golf playing a rumble.

    Try here: http://gui.ie/home/playing-golf/open-fixtures.aspx

Looks like there is plenty on in that neck of the woods...

    Benny and Tamloc,

I thought the same but that GUI list is crap. Not one of those clubs has an open competition this Saturday bar Esker Hills and that's a rumble.

Also, don't talk to me about Ballinasloe, it is indeed open week with competitions every day EXCEPT Saturday!

Moate's open competition list is accurate on GUI - I know as I put them on there myself. We have a few busy weekends coming up with our Vice Captains prize, a Club Sub comp and then Captains Prize all in quick succession. Unfortunately that means that our next open at a weekend isnt until Friday 27th & Saturday 28th July.

Sorry we couldnt accommadate you this time but hopefully you will be able to get down again sometime.

Thanks Andy, appreciate the reply. I won't be back in the area until August so will check out your fixture diary then to see if there's an open available.

Is there a competition on Saturday or is it just casual play GS?

Thinking about playing Esker this weekend, maybe the Open Singles on Sunday.

Coming from Kilkenny and havnt played it before, wondering is it worth the trip up?

Anyone know how its been holding up with the recent weather?

I haven't played there recently but I think its worth the trip. Very hard on the legs but an excellent course.

Few tough holes if you were never there before. My first round there was a total disaster but last few have been fairly good.

ha. even those of us with local knowledge can have tough rounds there. Played there saturday and sunday and today my calf muscles are ready to snap :-), need to get a bit fitter

Considering the amount of rain recently, the course is holding up very well and hasnt been closed at any stage.

I bet! tough walking course, I was carrying the bag aswell!

Ya it has great drainage by the looks of it. That pin on 13th yest was outrageous though!

Even the members i was playing with were not impressed!
