Micra Problem

My mother's 2003 Micra Auto has developed an annoying fault. When you start it from cold the revs hunt for a few seconds before settling down to normal. Sometimes it cuts out, sometimes it doesn't. If it was a manual it wouldn't be so much of a problem but its an auto so when you put it into D it judders and jumps. There's no engine management light on in the dash but there was a fault code P1065 ECM backup circuit stored. Her mechanic cleared the fault, checked the wiring etc but the problem still persists. I wonder does the ECM have to be changed or can it be re-programmed? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a vacuum pipe or auto choke issue.
Is it all the time or just when cold?

Thanks for your reply. It mostly happens from cold starts, there's no temp needle in the car so I can't say if it happens when its up to temperature or not. When you start it the revs go up to about 1500 then back down to 500, back up again to 1000 before settling down to the correct idle. Its like the ECM is confused by the air/fuel ratio for a few seconds.
