Hurley Grip

A friend plays with a hurley grip. He keeps insisting that he can get down to 12, he plays off 17 at the moment. I was wondering what is the lowest handicap you know from someone who uses a hurley grip. Thanks

Dumbest thread ever to be honest, i know a guy off 4 playing this way. I also know a man who chips everything with ONE hand on the club, so yeah golf is a mental sport and there are many ways to play it. Consistent is the key to score, not "how" its done.

There's loads of low handicappers who play with hurling grip and as Tones said consistency is key no matter what the grip. I played a barton shield match against the former clare hurling goalkeeper who is also now former waterford manager and he was off 2, although don't know if his golf justified this handicap. Interesting character alright

To be fair I don't think this is a stupid thread, because if the Hurley grip did provide consistency then how come I don't know any golfer on the main professional tours who use it?

Is someone only using it because they played hurling? Obviously there's going to be less of a chance that a top pro would have it then??

How about this pro with a reverse grip?
He beat Gary Player in his prime but shortly afterwards was banned from playing by South Africa's apartheid government. A sad story

There is more than 1 pro player playing cackhanded

Who though, I can't recall ever seeing any top pro playing cackhanded?

added some links, they are the 2 i know off, maybe more. Theres also that sewsunker (sp?) lad who always gets mentioned

Not top players by any account but the Scotish fella was an amateur champion

Just saying that Hurley/cack/crosshanded is not going to stop you getting a low handicap. Its been done on here plenty on here at this stage

Silly cos theres 2 other threads on this in the past few weeks dude, This "my friend is cackhanded but reckons he can get to a 12 handicap" craic justifies it as silly in my head anyway :)

**Awaits people to say what about you and your "look at me getting to single figures" thread :)**

Condescending much. I know plenty of hurley grip single figure players.

At least 2 guys in my club that I know of are off single figures with hurley grips, they are both long hitters and both good putters and both are very poor when chipping, the hurley grip looks clumsy with delicate chips, but apart from that, they can hit greens in reg, both playing off 8 or so.

I'm playing since Easter but only last month have I been playing using the Proper grip .
And with every round I play I'm improving and it feels so akward to hold the club with the hurley grip now .

If I didn't change my grip I would have more then likely giving up the game as I was getting no better if anything I was getting worse .

But I do know a gentleman that plays of 7 with the Hurley grip

There are actually people who play cack handed while chipping because (allegedly) it helps to stop the wrists breaking down and flicking the ball. Same idea as putting cack handed. Chris Couch won on the US tour a few years ago playing like this. Pretty sure he chipped in on 17 or 18.

No matter what way you play there will be someone who has been successful playing a totally different way....

Edit: From wiki "He won with a 55 foot chip-in (using a cross-handed grip)"

I think it just makes it more difficult for an individual to follow tips be it on YouTube, from fellow players on the course or even in lessons. The distances between the point of grip to the shoulder are opposite so for a start surely the ball position needs to move in order to keep a straight left arm.

I play off 11 with a hurley grip.

My biggest problem was driving and this is the first year I have managed to do it after playing for more than 20 years and regularly (once per week) for the last 4.
I have to grip right down the shaft to control the drives.
I dont have problems with my short game though due to it I dont think.

Yeah tip number 1, move to an orthodox grip so we can give you more tips.

When did I say I hadn't an orthodox grip? My point is of course someone can be a good golfer with a Hurley grip or any non orthodox grip, swing, style whatever. It's just going to more difficult and may take more time to figure out things within their game that can normally be sorted with one single tip/drill.

I rarely see a player out on the course who does everything as they are 'supposed' to.

I wasn't talking about you in particular.
