    Hello!

Could someone please attach a copy of the time table for the APM elective. I notice that neither the chartered grind school nor griffith are offering any revision courses for the APM elective; can anyone offer some advice on the best way to prepare for this exam please

I thought I should make a separate thread on this. Is anyone here doing this elective. There doesn't seem to be much material on this on the website. Does anyone have any cases to share on this?

APM seems the least worst of the electives but I reckon they will mark it harder this year owing to the high pass rates in previous years.

Ferike1, I uploaded cases and questions & answers on the main FAE 2012 thread a few days ago. Hopefully these will be of some use to you.

I totally agree with you!! Started watching the lectures online and was shocked at the amount of economics in it! think alot of cap 2 sfma though so going to bring those folders tomoro see will they help some bit.

I checked all revision places and none for APM unfortunately and there doesnt seem to be any notes/emails doing the rounds!!!

think il continue with lectures online going through them slowly enough but finding it effective and then qs i guess...

APM was grand today compared to the CORE.

    So happy I picked it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭froggatt2011

I thought it was grand too, but I ran out of time. Spent too long on sim 1 then couldn't get my tempo up. Need to work on that. What did u make of the bonus part in sim 3?

Said employee evaluations should not be anonymous and should have justification provided for rating to avoid people getting together and giving artifically high/low rankings. Other financial measures should be used such as if departments come in under budget, hit sales targets. The manager opinion should be given in private. Also said if profitability goes up > than cost of bonus then it is worthwhile. Just said that the training thing was good and didn't really need change.
Couldn't really consult the book. Seemed more like it was HR.

I think its so pointless having to calculate ratios, it takes up so much time and you get jack for calculating them. They should just give you them. Also the NPV took a large chunk of time.

Couldn't agree more. Found it a little out of place but had a bash anyway along similar lines, but I was basically out of time by then.

The NPVs really did take ages!!

The balanced scorecard was a gift but again a time consuming exercise.

Roll on the weekend for a bevvie or 20 then back to the grind.

How are yas getting on? It's a tough old slog....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭ferike1

Going okay. I think there is only so much that can come up in APM as opposed to the others. Touch wood!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 563 ✭✭✭BESman

Ya I don't want to jinx it but definitely think APM is a breeze compared to Core. Nice defined competency statement, only so much they can ask.

Only issue I have is that there aren't really any good notes on this subject. I find myself relying on the book mostly which is excellent. Other than that, I'm using cases. What kind of notes is everyone else relying on? Do you think the book is enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭ferike1

Have a general knowledge about financial issues. Also the finance/mgmt accounting and strategy stuff from the core overlaps with it. SWOT etc.

Also no harm in checking out P4 and P5 from the ACCA books.

The textbook really is superb. Read that from cover to cover the morning before the exam and u might have a chance of passing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭ferike1

To be honest I feel like I could sit APM tomorrow and pass, I felt I did enough even after the mock. Not that I am getting complacent with it. Still covering questions and looking for the textbook but there really is so much that can be asked.

    (Again no jinx intended!)

I am in the same boat having passed Core in 2010 and failing the audit elective twice. So basically I am in the last chance saloon this year and really cant f*ck this up! Any advice greatly appreciated.

It might be no harm to have a condensed version of your Core MA and Finance notes with you on the day but I think the APM book and notes should cover most of it.

What are people study for the section 5 , as there are not many questions on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Scuba_Steve84

Hey guys, at this stage are you still going through the book or just hammering away at cases? I'm a bit concerned about section 3, the lecture notes didn't exactly tie into it, and reading the book is just killing me with boredom. Thinking i should just get stuck into the cases and hope that covers most theory or points me to where i should be reading up on!

I'm going batty trying to find these online.

Does anyone have the 2011 APM Mock paper and solution, or the solution to the 2012 Mocks.

So appreciative if anyone can upload.

Indeed. I would suggest Business Leadership notes as well as back up, but the manual really is pretty good.

Anyone happen to have Joe Healy's breakdown of the APM syllabus which he referred to during the online revision session?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Stabshauptmann

    What did it look like?
    Was it the competency statement?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Stabshauptmann

Or this, the questions by section?

Sorry, I'm repeating from last year and dont know what you're looking for.

Sorry, I'm repeating from last year and dont know what you're looking for.

Thank you. It's not this one though, it's another spreadsheet that basically contains the same info I think, so thanks for that!

Its the excel spreadsheet that has the topics list and which of the questions relate to them. It also has a frameworks listing that looks useful. He gave it out in the revision lecture iirc. If no one has this ill email him tomorrow and then upload it.

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has / knows where to find the Rush Plc Case for APM?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 cafeaulait

    Hi all,
In addition to Rush above, would anyone have the Pitem or Douglas Glass case studies that they could upload?

How are people finding this? I think a combination of the book and investment appraisal should have you in with a chance. Some of the stuff can be interesting and a welcome break from the core, in so far as international business can be interesting!

You will find the Pitem case in the Session 9 folder on institute website (APM section) Hope this helps! :D

Douglas Glass is on the sample paper..

What do people make of the Institute running that session on the CAP2 SFMA??

Will they break from the norm with investment appraisal and go with something like swaps, god help us if they do!!

Swaps aren't so bad. Step by step approach as per CAP2 and ye'll fly through it. Don't stress!

I was looking through the mock this year

In one of the sims you have to get a WACC for another country

I got 10.1% and this was marked as wrong.

    What did you guys get?

    I used the formula - 1 + k(f)/1 + k(h) = 1 + r(f)/1+ r(h)

The one where you are setting up a company in India. Bison

    The rates given were

    UK discount - 8%
    India Interest Rate - 4%
    UK Interest Rate - 2%

Haven't done since mock but back then I adjusted the fx rate.

I take it you were multiplying 1.08 *1.04/1.02 to get your 10.1%??

    That appears correct to me.
