Im heading to Oz in Aug and was gong to give my 17hmr to my cousin while I was gone.

My question is as it is his first licence what do you need to show as far as competency ?

Would a letter from myself stating that I have taught him safe handling and shooting practices and have brought him shooting on many occasions be suffice or does he have to do a competency course...?

Write the letter, and have him talk to the FO. It might suffice as previous experience.

However a lot of Gardaí are now using the competency course as a standard because in their view a certificate holds more weight than a letter of recommendation.

IOW try it, but prepare to do the course.

As far as I know the NARGC runs a very affordable course on a regular basis. No doubt other organisations do the same.

He will have to do the course if its his first licence. and will get a cert to prove it. The course is about €25
