    Hey guys
Need to replace my driving licence as it's in tatters, it says on the citizens website that you need to show proof of id aswell (passport), is it possible to apply for this by post, just send a copy of my passport? not sure ill get time to go into the office to do it in person. Pretty sure i always just applied by post.

    Cheers,

Yes, you can apply by post. You will however need to go into your local Garda station and get the D-800 Application for Duplicate Driving License form. Fill it out. Check the box that says your DL has been destroyed, as opposed to it it being lost or stolen. Get the boys in blue to sign and stamp the form. Send that in along with 10 quid and two new passport photos signed on the back. You'll get the new DL back in 5 working days.

I had to go into my motor tax office yesterday to replace a lost license. I did not have any photo ID with me. I was told that it was not necessary as I was "already in their system", whatever that means. They were able to look me up with my name, address and PPS number. Not sure if that would apply to postal applications too. Give them a ring and ask them it you need to send in your passport. I wouldn't be sending my passport off in the post to anyone, unless I really, really had to.

I wasn't allowed to apply for duplicate license by post unless I was willing to post my original passport with the application. Photocopy stamped by gardai was not sufficient. So I had to go to the tax office.

Edit: sorry, I just copped that you actually have your old license. That should be sufficient I would have thought. I had lost mine.

Op unless your licence really is in rag order, or about to expire soon, could you not wait until January next and get the new credit card style licence?

You'd be the first one of your friends to own one id imagine :D
