Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

I hope Apple's injunction on the Galaxy Nexus will benefit people outside of the US who want to purchase it. Over €200 difference between buying it here and buying it in the US. Just wish I knew somebody who lived in America.

I know its not really Jelly Bean specific but the PDK is probably the announcement I'm most excited about considering I'm still waiting on ICS on my HTC Desire S. Would love to see Jelly Bean by Christmas on it.

Apple Fanboys will always find something to throw at Android and it always makes for interesting reading.

If youre waiting for an official release id say the chances are very very slim

It's amazing that only 7% of android based phones are currently using Ice Cream Sandwich.

It's so superior to previous versions, if more phones had it they would dominate the market.

The problem is, when you buy a phone running say gingerbread, then the likes of Samsung and HTC already have your money, for them you getting the latest version of the OS is not a priority, they'd much rather you buy a new phone, hence why new HTC phones get sense 4.0 while HTC phones that originally ran gingerbread get sense 3.6

Hopefully the manufacturers will realise that one of the few things holding Android back is fragmentation, this is why developers in many cases would rather just make an app for iOS, and while this may not influence many new customers coming to Android it would influence people coming from the likes of iOS if they feel then can't have their favorite apps. That's why we end up with the likes of SKY Go still not functioning on ICS at a time when the flagship ICS device is about to jump to Jelly Bean.

It would be nice to think that in the future the manufacturers will try to update as quickly as possible to the latest OS to make sure their newest phones are only operating one OS thereby making it easier for app developers thereby getting more people to buy their phones but I can't help but feel that doesn't concern them too much as there are still so many non smartphone people out there that won't know or care what version of the OS they are running.

Regarding Google Now, While I love the idea of it I cant see it working over here like it does in the US. Really hope I'm wrong.

Just hope Sammy dont strip it out of the S3 update... if it gets JB at all...

Yeah project butter has made some improvements but I still find there is some lag, a lot better experience though.

The pdk is great news but I think it will only benefit new devices, OEM's will likely have the same attitude to already released devices.

The new photo gallery is good, pinch out gives a nice webOS style and a swipe to delete although there's no dialog box for deleting, just automatic. There is an undo feature which helps.
The camera has been slightly updated, auto focus is better and there is the sliding animation that carries through the rest of the OS with a sliding transition for window animations, although it's still not consistent everywhere. It's good the way swiping through the gallery after taking photos works in that when you swipe back past the most recent photo it kind of slides back into the camera app.

The app selection dialog is better I.E. selecting which browser to open links etc. It's minor but it's quite nice in improving UX.
Really it is just all minor changes, but they're good.

The only major thing really is Google now, and that's quite nice in the way it returns a lot of popular results on a card layout.
Most impressive thing so far is the way it works with reminders, traffic and location to tell you when you need to leave to make your appointments on time.
The rest just comes over time the more you search so that it has more information.

Galaxy Nexus is e590 off expansys.ie, but is e394 off hardwareversand.de :pac:

So no need to order from america and get stung for customs etc.

Good comparison video here to Siri, and it seems to royally kick its ass. It also works offline which is a massive blow to Apple really. With every release Android seems to bury apple more and more. And Android releases are a whole lot more frequent than iOS releases.

What Android really needs is a decent marketing campaign - 98% of people are blasted with Apple marketing but really see almost nothing of Android unless they happen to buy one or see a friends phone etc.

is there an .apk for google now? or is it just built into jb?

It can be extracted from a dump, but I think there's new API's in 4.1 that are needed so it wouldn't work on anything else.
I could be wrong, but as far as I've heard - that's he case.

Assuming Samsung don't update the SGS2 with JB, I assume there will be custom ROMs based on it eventually.

Oh sweet, another update I'll never see on my phone.

Probably not officially, but if there's a forum for it on XDA then there will quite likely be a ROM built for your phone. ;)

I'd say it's fairly likely since it's such a popular phone. I just upgraded to the S3 and I have to say the screen is fantastic.

I see there is now an alpha release of JB for the HTC One X: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737736 however loads stuff does not work on it yet. I'm sure in a few weeks a decent release will be available

    Especailly when the source hits.

Would I be right in saying that the system requirements for JB are the same as that for ICS?
Meaning that any device that got ICS, should by default support JB also?

I know there is not a huge amount new in it, but I'm looking forward to seeing if there is any performance difference on my GN when this gets pushed to it in the next couple of weeks.

The APK for Googles "What's this Song" is available here:http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/07/01/download-whats-this-song-sound-search-widget-from-jelly-bean-no-root-needed/

Had no problems with it on my One X and so far it's proving very good at identifying songs. With no Music in the Play Store here it just redirects you to the Play homepage.

I just tried installing it, says its installed but cannot see it in apps. Tried to install again, says its already installed. How do I run the thing?

For sure. Will probably finally root mine and put JB on when there's a stable version. ICS w Sense 3.6 is pretty awful.

you don't need to. just set up a forwarding address with www.viaddress.com.

i bought a kindle fire and kindle touch in november last year from amazon in the US and it worked a treat.

they were also kind enough to repackage them inside a large children's toy so i didn't get stung for customs and delivery was only about 3 days from the US to ireland. :)

    This post has been deleted.

Google are known for this , they release a product that does what it says on the tin , and then add features in the coming weeks and months.

I'm pretty sure it'll be added.

    Send from my Jelly Bean:pac:

wow thanks for the heads up on this! A whole new internet shopping world awaits me :)
Do you need to fill out the USPS form thingy for each one you do, and was it expensive for the shipping to Ireland?
    thanks :D

Why are you wasting your time with that? The american prices are not cheap, they do not show sales tax.

It's the same price from Germany, maybe even cheaper without the hassle of sales tax and currency conversion.

e375 from germany (hwvs), e590 from irish supplier (expansys).

Sales tax does not apply in the US for online purchases if your address is in a different state -which presumably you try to ensure

Customs duty (which is probably more than sales tax) certainly does apply if you are importing it to Ireland, or are you advocating fraud?

Also you must take FX (dollar:euro) into account. And btw there is no such thing as "fee free" FX - no matter what your bank/creditcard tells you (because of the spread they apply).

I am certainly not advocating fraud; I was merely referring to sales tax in the US, when shipping to US addresses.

As you point out VAT and Customs should be applied if coming into Ireland from non EU country.

depends on what sort of shipping you choose from your US supplier. i got expedited shipping from amazon, so it never went via USPS so no form to fill out.

you might get caught by customs on the way in, but it's pretty much pot luck, although i think i might have been let off as 'the large box everything was in was for a children's toy, although i'm not 100% sure.

viaddress have a shipping calculator on the website so you know how much it's going to cost to send over.

watch out for something called "dimensional weight" though if you order anything very large but not all that heavy as you can be charged extra for a bulky but relatively light package as it takes up more room.

    Yes I have. Doesn't work.

When I installed it there were immediately two cards, the weather and travel information to work (For some reason I wasn't expecting that to work in Ireland, it does however mistakenly think I take the car rather than the bus to work, so the time it tells me it will take is very wrong, I don't see any setting to change this to public transport, possibly because Irish public transport isn't available on Google).

I will give the cards a few days use before I give impressions on it.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned yet that flash will no longer be available from 4.1 onwards. Not from Adobe anyway.

I guess this is because it has been well flagged from Adobe that they are withdrawing from mobile flash development

It is available (until August at least). The APK will always work but will not be offically supported or hosted.

Yeah, sorry, thought that might be a simple solution! :)
Looks like there's other issues at play here!
