I'm looking at buying a 2009 diesel golf, however I'm a little confused on the differences between the engine choices.

Basically I'm wondering about the entry level model(not the red I versions).
    I think the 1.9L is 105bhp; the 2.0L being 110bhp.

Is the 2.0L version much heavier on fuel?
Would the 1.9L retain better re-sale value?

The 1.9 TDi PD has been around since around 1992, it is a solid engine with simple mechanics but has a narrow powerband. It is unrefined and loud by today's standards but less complex.

The 2.0 TDi CR is a more modern common rail engine, the 110bhp version was a stop gap until the 1.6 TDi arrived in 2010. It is quieter than the 1.9 more refined, has a more balanced powerband and a little better on fuel. Downside is that like most modern diesels there are more complex parts meaning higher repair bills if they fail.

There was a 140bhp 2.0L too, not sure if it was for sale here? Also a 170bhp 2.0L called the GTD.

PD is only the fuel injector system, the basic lump didn't change much since then. The 1.9 TDi first appeared in the Audi 80 circa 1991/1992 afaik.
